If you’ve visited Rogers Centre, once called SkyDome, or if you’ve followed the Toronto Blue Jays, you are bound to know about the lady who has made various appearances behind the home plate. Does “Home plate lady” strike any chords? Well, it should. For almost a decade and more, the second row behind home plate at Rogers Centre has been witness to the famous home plate lady, who is also affectionately known as “Grandma Blue Jay” or “Baseball Grandma.”

Recently, a video from the 2019 season resurfaced, where the home plate lady, sitting in her usual position, barely flinched when a foul ball raced toward her. But two days later, in another game, she made sure to flinch, and fans couldn’t help but stand amazed.

Why did fans call the famous and viral home plate lady the “calmest lady in Canada?”

The mysterious lady managed to gather lots of attention, and to the extent that fans created various accounts by her name. @Homeplate_Lady, @BlueJays_Queen, and @HomePlateLady are the names of these Twitter accounts. Nevertheless, in the resurfaced video from 2019, the seasoned home plate audience didn’t even remotely flinch at a foul ball traveling her way.

Two days later, in another game, she sarcastically reacted to a foul ball heading in her direction with her hands in the air, displaying that she knew everything about people talking. BaseballHistoryNut, an MLB fan page re-uploaded this video recently, and captioned it saying,

“Home Plate lady at the SkyDome went viral for not flinching at a foul ball, she found out and two days later she does this…”

Fans were simply awestruck by how she didn’t even bat an eyelid when the ball came in her direction.

There were also several rumors circulating about the identity of the woman. One of the most well-known speculations suggests that she might be Mrs. Ted Rogers, the spouse of the previous president and CEO of Rogers Communications. Another popular theory is that she could be the individual who won the contest to name the SkyDome back in 1987.

However, there are also rumors that she might be a long-time season ticket holder, although her identity remains unknown, and according to a CBC interview, it was probably the less-flashy final speculation.

Toronto Blue Jays in 2023: through spring training and opening day

In the Grapefruit League, Toronto fared pretty decently after they ended Spring Training in the fifth position at 0.531 with 17 wins and 15 losses. Moving on, the much-awaited opening day turned out to be a success for the Blue Jays after they beat the Cardinals 10-9 at Busch Stadium. However, since then, the Blue Jays have consecutively lost three matches – two against the Cardinals and one against Kansas City.

But obviously, it is too soon to pass any judgment on how the rest of their season will look.
