It’s common practice to see kids take up the mantle of their parent’s titles and it’s usually a toss-up to see whether they will be as good as them. Sometimes the child surpasses the parent and becomes even better. This is especially fun to watch in sports, where family members are sometimes pitted against each other. Rarely, if ever, do they get to play on the same team.

It did, however, happen once in baseball when a father-son duo set a record for back-to-back home runs in 1990. It must have been a riveting game to watch because it was the first incident of its type. Nevertheless, NBA royalty LeBron James recently expressed his desire to get a chance like this with his own son.

Bronny James, the 18-year-son of LeBron, is only in high school right now but already making waves as a basketball player. He won the Most Valuable Player award right in his first year and his highest season score stands at 17 points. The younger James seems to be following in his father’s footsteps, who is no stranger to an overwhelming number of titles.

The Lakers star is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and has won four NBA MVP awards, and four NBA championships, among many, many other accolades. Recently, he told ESPN how he wanted to pull a Griffey and play with his son on the court. To him, it wouldn’t matter whether they were both on the same team or playing against each other.

Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. were legendary

It was Sept. 14 of the year 1990 when two players made MLB history like no other incident before. The Seattle Mariners were playing the California Angels and Seattle had a father-son duo playing for them. Something that had never happened before and hasn’t happened since. The exceptionally talented 40-year-old father and 20-year-old son played together for two seasons, 1990 and 1991.

“Being a father, I guess it’s a dream come true,” Griffey Sr. once told the Washington Post. “This is the pinnacle—this is the thing in my career that I’m very proud of—very proud of. You can talk about the ’76 batting race I was in and all that. But to me, this is number one.” For the Griffey men, it’s truly ‘like father, like son’!
