“I Totally Admire Him”- Despite Being 11 Years Older, NBA Icon Michael Jordan Once Fell for Derek Jeter’s Immense Greatness

Derek Jeter had a profound impact on the city of New York. The baseball great spent the entirety of his MLB career with the team and was loved by all. Although New York has had a lot of star athletes, none were as beloved as Derek Jeter during his time as a player. He repaid that love from the city with loyalty and fantastic performances.

One NBA legend commented on Jeter’s impact as a player and the things he achieved in New York. Furthermore, he even commented on the Yankee legend’s way of doing things. This NBA player is none other than Michael Jordan.

Michael Jordan had special words for Derek Jeter in 2014

In 2014, shortly before Jeter retired from baseball, NBA legend Michael Jordan said a few words about the Yankee icon. Jordan said that he admired Jeter for his long career and the way he went about his career. The Chicago Bulls legend also credited the Yankee great for being able to navigate the difficulties of playing in New York. Despite being 11 years older than Jeter, Jordan praised the Yankee legend for his maturity.

According to NJ.com, Jordan said, “I totally admire him. Being in a city like New York where one little hiccup basically could fry him… he did it in a way where no one could criticize him. And he’s done his job for 20 years. I think that says a lot about him.” Jeter considers Jordan to be a big brother figure and the two have been close friends for decades.

Furthermore, the respect is not one-sided, as Jeter also once picked Jordan as the greatest of all time over another NBA great. The two have been close ever since they met for the first time in 1994 during the Arizona Fall League. Following that first meeting, Jordan took Jeter under his wing and mentored him.

Jeter credits Jordan with mentoring him both on and off the field

On multiple occasions, Derek Jeter has credited MJ for mentoring him and teaching him how to cat both on and off the field. Furthermore, he credits the NBA legend for mentoring him in business as well.
