Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez were not an ordinary couple. From music to baseball, both millionaires had a sizeable income source backing them. But they had another thing in common – an interest in business. Owner of A-Rod Corp, the former New York Yankees slugger was slowly building his empire. But as is with any couple, Rodriguez wanted something to call his own with Lopez.

After building a career as an actress and a pop star, J-Lo was also looking to build her own business in 2021. The ex-couple wanted to venture into the sports ownership world first and foremost. They even made a serious bid for the New York Mets. But unfortunately, for an array of reasons, the Wilpon/Katz family ultimately handed over the franchise to billionaire Steve Cohen. Lopez, however, would have made history had she acquired the ownership.

Even in today’s age of slowly improving gender equality, there is one huge field that women have yet to make a mark on. And that is ownership stakes in any major American sports team. Jennifer Lopez understood that when she appeared on the podcast The Corp With A-Rod and Big Cat in September 2020. When Big Cat asked if she would be interested in investing in a sports team, the singer says, “In this day and age that would be something that would be so amazing. I don’t have anything to report on that end right now.”

“But I think in every field, especially institutions like Major League Baseball, that are so American at this moment in time, it is important to have diversity. And it is important for women to have positions of power that they’ve earned and deserve and can contribute in a way that is just as good as any man on the planet. So of course, I am for it, but nothing to report.”

Unfortunately for her, the only news later on was the failed Mets bid. Despite the promise of a World Series in the next 10 years, A-Rod and J-Lo missed out on the franchise ownership. Given Rodriguez’s complicated past and the first woman owner tag, perhaps the Wilpon/Katz weren’t too comfortable being saddled with history.

Soon after, the couple broke up, with Rodriguez taking Lopez’s connection to the sports world with him. While Lopez has gone on to build multiple other businesses, the former Yankee accomplished his dream by stepping into the NBA world. However, even that was in danger once, and Rodriguez may have Lopez to blame.

Alex Rodriguez’s T-wolves Future in Danger Because of J-Lo Breakup

Alex Rodriguez teamed up with business magnate Marc Lore to bid for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves shortly before he broke up with Lopez. According to The New York Post, the former baseballer was not prepared for it from a financial standpoint. “His ability to raise capital went from strong to meaningfully weaker,” a source told The Post. “J.Lo validated him.”

Ultimately, things did work out of course. Rodriguez and Lore are now getting ready to buy majority ownership of the team next year. But what a snag in the fabric that year was.
