The free agent market is hot, with Opening Day just approaching. And the Philadelphia Phillies return in the mix for a surprising name this time — Blake Snell. The reigning NL Cy Young winner is still unsigned despite it being the beginning of March. According to reports, the Phillies are inclined toward him, but only under one condition. 

Before revealing that condition, it’s essential to understand that this news comes after the Phillies were described as “lukewarm” on Snell. They prioritized extensions for Aaron Nola and pursued other starting pitching options like Yoshinobu Yamamoto. However, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated, “I can’t tell you that somebody doesn’t fall into your lap at some point where you say, ‘Gee, that’s an opportunity we can’t turn down.‘” Does this mean a potential deal? 

How Philadelphia Phillies and Blake Snell could be a match

Well, by now, it is established that a deal can happen only on the condition that it is short-term. It turns out that Snell’s reported openness to shorter contracts with opt-outs sits right with the Phillies’ visible interest. This strategy is a win-win; let’s dig deeper.

On the one hand, Philadelphia could gain a relatively dominant arm without a big financial commitment. Conversely, the 31-year-old could secure a high average annual value and perhaps re-enter the market next year. Who knows, the environment might be more favorable then.

Adding Snell to a rotation already boasting Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, and Taijuan Walker would make the Phillies an intimidating force. Cristopher Sanchez could be moved.
