Hispanic Heritage Month may be over, but Latinx businesspeople are always thriving. One such personality is former New York Yankees player, Alex Rodriguez. A self-made millionaire, A-Rod has traded his baseball bat for a pen, and he’s excelling at it. The former Yankee may have come from humble beginnings, but he has turned his talents into a comfortable lifestyle through backbreaking hard work. And he’s always ready to give tips.
After retiring from a career as an athlete, Rodriguez’s pinstripes look a bit different. But already having experienced life in the spotlight, he knows how to handle it well. In addition to his role as an MLB analyst, the ex-shortstop makes public appearances at business conferences, guiding budding entrepreneurs. A few years ago, he evoked his mentors to advise a specific community.

If one couldn’t guess from his name, Alex Rodriguez’s roots lie in Latin America. Coming from parents who were immigrants from the Dominican Republic, A-Rod grew up in Washington Heights and then Miami. But it would be natural to assume that his parents’ birthplace, a country he spent some time in as well, would be close to his heart.

As such, he makes frequent appearances at L’Attitude, a business event aimed at understanding “the U.S. Latino cohort that is driving its growth.” Rodriguez has always emphasized the importance of having mentors in one’s chosen career path, whatever it may be. And at a L’Attitude event in 2018, the former Yankee referred to their advice in his life.
“Working is very important but you wanna think smart and you wanna work smart. And you wanna always think outside the box. My mentors always taught me, ‘Don’t stop at no. How do we get to yes?'” he told the audience. “We are a very powerful group and my hope is that through conferences like these, we work much better together, we integrate much better together. Because together, obviously, we are much more powerful than we are apart.”
