After freshly winning the National League Cy Young Award with the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed a promising 29-year-old pitcher for a whopping three-year, $102 million contract despite his already questionable reputation. Overlooking that, the Dodgers signed Trevor Bauer, which, in hindsight, proved to be a lapse in judgment.
After leading the start of 2021 with a solid 8-5 record at 2.59 with 137 strikeouts, and when new sexual battery rumors came to light, the MLB and Dodgers placed Trevor Bauer on administrative leave. Months later, in violation of the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, the 2018 All-Star received a 324-game suspension. And now, even though Bauer has been given clearance to continue his baseball career, the Dodgers parted ways with the 2020 Cy Young winner.

Bauer, who will turn 32 this month, after an appeal, got his suspension reduced to 194 games. And most recently, he received clearance to start on Opening Day. Now, overlooking the pitcher’s talent, the Los Angeles Dodgers, as expected, have made a unanimous decision to let him go, while having $22.5 million at stake.

In an official statement, the Los Angeles Dodgers said, “Two extensive reviews of all the available evidence in this case – one by Commissioner Manfred and another by a neutral arbitrator – concluded that Mr. Bauer’s actions warranted the longest active player suspension in our sport for violation of this policy. Now that this process has been completed, and after careful consideration, we have decided that he will no longer be part of our organization.”
Subsequent to the Dodgers’ official statement, Trevor Bauer reached his Twitter expressing surprise. He said, “Following the two weeks of conversations around my return to the organization, I sat down with the Dodgers leadership in Arizona yesterday who told me that they wanted me to return and pitch for the team this year.”

With an additional $22.5 million owed, it will be hard for the pitcher to find an appropriate landing spot in 2023. And considering the end of all major signings, an opening day position in the 40-man roster for Bauer seems heavily unlikely.
