A record made today will be broken tomorrow, whether in a game or for some memorabilia of it. A record recently got broken when a 1952 card of the baseball legend Mickey Mantle got sold at an auction. The Commerce Comet played his entire Major League Career with the New York Yankees from 1951 to 1968. The remarkable switch hitter in baseball history played as a center fielder, right fielder, and first baseman.

The previous record for a sports card was $7.25 million, set earlier this month. Now, the legend’s 52′ card broke all records for any sports item, card, or memorabilia.

What was the original price of the Mickey Mantle 1952 card?

1952 was also the year when the ‘Mick’ won his first all-time award and second world championship of his career. The year holds great power, even to this day. When that card (originally purchased for $50,000 in 1991) got sold at $12.6 million with Heritage Auctions. That also included the buyer’s premium.

Heritage’s director, Chris Ivy, said“This card is arguably the finest-condition example of the most iconic post-war card in the world. That grade, plus the fact it has documented provenance from the most storied find in hobby history, puts this card in a category of its own.”

Having won many accolades on the field, it comes as no shock that Mantle’s 52′ graded card made a massive record.

The card got sold after more than a month of cheering for it. That is the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card with a 9.5 grade from grader SGC.
