The MVP race is heating up. Baseball is in its last few weeks of the regular season, with teams making a rally for some late-season wins. While the American League has Kyle Tucker and Cory Seager, Shohei Ohtani is an almost sure MVP winner. But things are not quite certain in the National League, with Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in the close chase. Which Los Angeles Dodgers player will take the win?
Meanwhile, Freeman is also making history with a Dodgers record. The first baseman has been competing with teammate Betts for an MVP-caliber performance all season long. And while both have an equally good chance of making it, Freeman is pulling ahead in one respect.

Each MLB team has produced some legends in the past, names that any baseball fan will recognize. But there are also equally obscure names that have populated the rest of the ranks, lost to the pages of history. Some of those Dodgers are from the last century, who topped the single-season doubles chart. But Freddie Freeman has pulled ahead of everyone.

Codify Baseball recently posted a list of stats with the simple caption, “my goodness freddie freeman.” Indeed, the numbers show Freeman at the top with 52 doubles. The rest of the names are Johnny Frederick, Shawn Green, Babe Herman, and Wes Parker. Interestingly, Freeman topped himself at number five, from 47 doubles in 2022. In the last six years, the first baseman has topped the NL three times.
While the league-wide record may be still far ahead, analysts predict Freeman is on a course to hit at least 63 doubles in 2023. Is it any wonder he’s in the MVP race, given his all-around spectacular performance this season? Even the Dodgers manager is impressed.

Mookie Betts has shone as an outfielder as well as behind the bat this season and is easily an NL favorite. But some hold more love for Freeman because he just never gives up. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers player used to practice with his dad as a pitcher, perfecting his swing.
“It’s amazing, it’s not easy,” Dave Roberts says of his player. “You don’t just pencil the back of the baseball card. It takes a lot of work and his work, preparation, his mindset. He’s relentless and, yeah, I know the record is 67, something like that.”
