The Oakland Athletics seem to have given up. Amid a disastrous season spent near the bottom of the league, the John Fisher-owned team may have finally hit rock bottom. After all, it can’t be easy to play when the audience is bent on boycotting or not showing up to the Coliseum at all. It’s a test of patience and integrity, apparently, but the A’s have lost the will to fight.
With the impending move to Las Vegas looming, fan protests as “Sell the team” chants seem to have gotten to the players, if not the ownership. Unfortunately, players only have so much authority for swaying the front office. Their recent game against the Washington Nationals only proved their willingness, or lack thereof, to play.

There’s a reason that the A’s performance consistently ranks near the bottom. Forget the lowest payroll, the players only seemed to get on the field perfunctorily.
Recently at Nationals Park, Oakland’s Luis Medina made an awful blunder. While everyone makes mistakes from time to time, it seemed like his heart wasn’t really in the game.

In the second inning, Medina pitched to Nationals shortstop Ildemaro Vargas, who hit the ball right back at him. Vargas, for his part, ran to cover first base, in a move that shouldn’t have been possible.
But the A’s pitcher moved rather unenthusiastically to tag the Washington player, who easily sped past him to touch the bag and be safe.

The audience roared in protest and even the Nationals’ play-by-play commentator seemed baffled. ?What is [Medina] doing? He never went to the bag, he never threw it to [Tyler] Soderstrom, and I?ll tell you, [first base coach] Eric Young Jr. is screaming in delight at Vargas for hustling!? says Bob Carpenter.
It makes one wonder whether all the protesting fans are doing is even worth it.
Baseball Fans Are Fed Up With the A’s
Every time the club makes headlines, fans fear more bad news. They have asked the rest of the league for help in open online letters and even received support from many cities. But it all seems to fall on deaf ears.
Perhaps the front office hopes that a move will be a fresh start, but what if the players seem uninterested in baseball now?

As a Mets fan, I feel a sense of relief that there’s a team out there worse than us.

In a bygone era, Medina was a prospect for the Yankees. Maybe he would have flourished in New York because the Oakland air seems to be not doing any good for him.
