There is something about familiar territory, that makes one buzz with elation. But this time, elation comes with a tinge of uncertainty. Not too long ago, after opting out of his single-year, $6.75 million player option with the New York Mets, the seasoned 6’5″ reliever made his decision. A rather “questionable” one.

He is back in orange and blue at an unexpectedly lower price. The decision of the righty choosing to pen down a new one-year deal for $4.5 million, has raised questions about his initial decision. The Mets now experience ripples of happiness through their front office.

Michael Marino added his opinion about Adam Ottavino’s decision on Twitter saying, “Clearly a questionable decision for Ottavino, but I’m sure the Mets are happy they got him back at a nice discount.” This is the same sentiment echoed by many fans. While some are excited by his return some wonder why the 6’5″ agreed to a bargain price.

Well, rightly so, Ottavino’s gamble generated immediate chatter. Foregoing guaranteed money on the table had baffled many folks. To add to it, he is currently 37 years old and his past is laden with concerns of injury. Having said that, was it a calculated risk for a potentially bigger payday elsewhere? While it’s possible that he bet on regaining peak form in a contract year, a simple change of scenery is what he desired perhaps.

Whatever the motivations, the Mets capitalized on the opportunity in a heartbeat. They snagged the reliever with postseason pedigree at almost $2 million less than his previous option. From the point of view of the Mets, beyond the immediate gain, they now have flexibility.

An Air of Uncertainty Despite A Relief For One Year

Ottavino’s commitment for a year frees up resources for other roster amendments or future deal negotiations. For Ottavino however, it’s a chance to establish his continued capabilities in a familiar environment. If done well, he could potentially be setting himself up for a larger deal next season. But only if he stays healthy and knows how to dominate.

However, some air of caution lingers. The veteran’s injury-laden history raises eyebrows. If he falters, the chance the Mets took could backfire. Nevertheless, for now, the club is happy about bolstering their bullpen with a familiar face at a price they can’t complain about. What the yields of this deal are, will come to light only as the season progresses.
