The New York Yankees, fresh off an infamous season, are at a crossroads. The question here is – How to fill the final spot in their relief corps? The task gets more serious because 2024’s Spring Training kicks off on February 14th. With Hector Neris talks seemingly stalling where do the Yankees stand with this crucial decision?

Up until recently, Neris, the former Houston Astros righty with a lights-out 2023 seemed like the perfect fit. However, now it appears that his presence in the Bronx is shrouded in doubt. The question mark looms over the Yankees’ final bullpen spot. With a handful of intriguing options vying for the opportunity, who will make it to the Big Apple? 

Is Hector Neris the Yankees’ Dream That Won’t Come True?

The chapter of Hector Neris can be named – The Dream That May Not Be. Well, at first glance, Neris was a super fit. His 1.74 ERA with Houston last year was jaw-dropping making his 2023 a lights-out season!  Moreover, his experience as a reliable late-inning arm seemed tailor-made for the Bronx. However, recent reports of stalled negotiations and conflicting information cast doubt on his arrival. So, if not Neris, then who? 

t is possible that Wandy Peralta returns. With the 34-year-old Astro slipping away, Peralta’s face looms large. Notwithstanding the late-season triceps problems which raise concerns, his dominant .138 average, .483 OPS in 97 plate appearances in 2023 against lefties and proven playoff skill make him the next best option. However, the matter of concern is his price tag especially with the history of his health concerns. 

The situation is not too hopeless either. Some youthful names appear on the horizon. While the Yankees are known to traditionally lean towards veteran reinforcements, their young and internal options cannot be overlooked. As per Dugout Station, “ Ron Marinaccio, Nick Ramirez, Cody Morris, and Cody Poteet could end up competing for the last spot in Spring Training“.  If they leverage this chance to impress the decision makers in the Bronx, they could potentially grab the coveted final bullpen spot.

New York Yankees’ Veteran Alternatives

In the off chance that the Yankees turn to veteran options, the pool of seasoned arms won’t disappoint them. Names like Ryan Brasier, Phil Maton, and Jakob Junis contribute different degrees of experience and skill. Brasier’s second-half resurgence with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Maton’s postseason skill are particularly noteworthy. However, one can’t rule out Junis’ home run susceptibility and Brasier’s past inconsistencies. And this in turn inhibits the Yankees leadership’s decision.
