Robert Downey Jr. said “Real power stays in the shadow” in his award-winning performance in Oppenheimer. This assertion might be fitting for the Chicago Cubs. Their silence and relative lack of movement raised several eyebrows. One wondered why the Cubs were missing from action. Well, it looks like they were always there – in the shadows, “making moves” away from everyone’s eyes.

It’s interesting how some teams make noise before any action while the Cubs have managed to stay completely silent. So it came as a surprise when a top analyst revealed that not only are the Cubs active, but their links are much more vivid than anyone ever imagined.

The silence of the Cubs was thought to be a result of their Cody Bellinger pursuit. Fans wondered whether the team was hedging all of their bets on Cody Love and ignoring everyone else in the market. Famous analyst Jim Bowden may have put those worries to rest with his recent words on Foul Territory.

“They’re involved and they’ve made significant offers to Jordan Montgomery, Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, and Rhys Hoskins. So they’re out there. Those guys haven’t signed yet, so they haven’t lost out on them. They’ve held their own, they got Counsell, and they’re making moves.”

When the Cubs appointed Craig Counsell as their manager, there were whispers that more investment was soon to follow. Though that hasn’t happened yet, Bowden’s words show that the North Siders have the will to do it. Cody Bellinger remains the focus, but the Cubs do need more players.

Reports have already revealed the Cubs’ interest in Hoskins and Chapman, but Jordan Montgomery comes as a surprise. While Monty is linked with the Texas Rangers, the New York Yankees, and the Boston Red Sox, the Cubs’ entry certainly makes his free agency all the more exciting. After all, apart from 2022, Monty’s record in the Wrigley Field has always been impeccable. But there’s a catch.

Even though these players suit the Cubs, the negotiations have all stretched very long. With Spring Training nearing, how many of these can the Cubs get by then?

The tremendous challenge for the Chi-Town squad

While Montgomery’s record in the Wrigley Field is good, many reports have indicated that he might have a slight preference for the Texas Rangers – the team he won the World Series with. On the other hand, Hoskins, Bellinger, and Chapman are all Scott Boras’ clients. With Boras more than ready to stretch things, it wouldn’t surprise if the Cubs enter February still negotiating.
