Is Cody Bellinger playing it safe, or is he betting on a Cubs comeback?

Cody Bellinger’s decision to opt into the remaining two years of his contract with the Chicago Cubs sure is a surprising move. Especially for a Scott Boras client, who’s known for guiding his business toward the biggest possible paydays. Bellinger, who opted into the remaining $27.5 million on his contract for 2025, will get $52 million over the next two years, a figure that, given his current market value, seems like a good financial decision in light of a downseason.

Bellinger was once one of the most dynamic hitters in baseball. His offensive production has dipped from the MVP-caliber level he showcased in 2019  – Cody Bellinger’s 2024 campaign was significantly below his career norms. While still a valuable player, his performance no longer matches the elite profile that might attract a massive, long-term deal. So, Bellinger may eventually transition to first base or full-time designated hitter as he ages.

Bellinger’s decision to stay in Chicago may be a financial safety net for now, but his future with the Cubs could still be temporary. If he continues to underperform, a trade could be in the cards. And you know who’s interested? As per Fansided, the New York Yankees appear to be a strong potential suitor – they need help both in the outfield and at first base, two positions where Cody Bellinger still provides solid production.

While Bellinger’s glove and bat may not shine as brightly as they once did, he’s still capable of providing steady, if unspectacular, play at both spots. A potential trade might not command a top-tier prospect from New York, but the Yankees could offer a package of MLB-ready talent that fits the Cubs’ timeline, especially as they look to continue their rebuilding efforts. Cody Bellinger’s contract is also manageable enough for New York to take on the full deal without breaking the bank, making him an affordable addition to the team.

The Cub’s trade targets for the 2025 season

The Chicago Cubs are ready for an active offseason; they are looking to rebuild their roster under new manager Craig Counsell. Despite a promising 2024 campaign that fell short of the playoffs, the Cubs are reportedly open to major roster shakeups. The team has star players Nico Hoerner and Cody Bellinger, both potentially on the trade block. With top prospect Matt Shaw ready for the big leagues, the Cubs could move Hoerner to clear space while acquiring a much-needed starting pitcher.

Hoerner’s ability to play both second base and shortstop makes him an attractive target for teams in need of middle-infield help. Cody Bellinger is another prime trade candidate. While his offensive numbers dipped in 2024, Bellinger remains a versatile asset. He’s capable of playing both the outfield and first base at a league-average level. The New York Yankees and New York Mets are both potential fits – given they are looking for left-handed hitting and added depth in their lineups.

The Cubs’ strategy this winter seems to be a balance between developing young talent and upgrading their pitching staff. By moving Hoerner or Bellinger, Chicago could open up room for Shaw and secure the pitching depth necessary to contend in 2025. With financial flexibility and Counsell’s leadership, the Cubs are well-positioned to reshape their roster into a competitive force in the NL Central, making this a major offseason.
