Could Carlos Correa be the missing piece for the Yankees, or just another risky gamble?

In December 2022, the New York Mets shook things by agreeing to get Carlos Correa. He was a three-time All-Star and the 2017 World Series champ—getting them to Queens wasn’t a piece of cake. She shelled out $315 million for a 12-year deal! But that buzz didn’t last long. Because just a day later, when Correa flew to New York for a physical, things took a bad turn. There were serious concerns about Correa’s right ankle, which was surgically repaired! The deal was off, and Correa then landed with the Minnesota Twins instead for a $200 million contract for six years.

Now, after two years, New York Post Joel Sherman is bringing the old tale once again. In a recent article, Sherman says that the New York Yankees and the Mets, who are already entangled with the Juan Soto decision, should also consider moving with Correa. It is a rather tantalizing thought, at this moment, given Correa’s injury history and price tag. But Correa gives some reasons why New York should give it a shot!

Sherman makes the case, saying that Carlos Correa is a proven clutch player. It might exactly be what the New York Yankees need in the lineup. And while Correa does have a huge deal with the Twins, the Mets had once offered him the same before. So, as Sherman sees the entire deal, if the Mets or Yankees could negotiate with the Twins to cover a part of Correa’s salary, the risks are well worth it. Given that, Correa might play limited games, but he plays like a thunderbolt then.

But here is when it gets interesting—Sherman mentioned that Correa has agreed to play third base next to his friend Francisco Lindor. So imagine a lineup with Correa at third and Mark Vientos at first. It would give some depth to the defense of the team. Sherman concluded his article by saying, “Correa is a worthwhile risk if his cost can be mitigated in dollars and prospects sent back.” He even said that he sees even the Astros, Correa’s old team, trying to re-acquire him if Bregman leaves during the free agency elsewhere.

But it isn’t just so simple, especially not for the New York Yankees!

Is it possible to see Carlos Correa in the New York Yankees?

Could Carlos Correa be the missing piece for the Yankees, or just another risky gamble?

Have an interesting take?

Sherman says no matter what happens with Soto, “there’s still a case for the New York teams to pursue Correa.” However, given that Carlos Correa was first with the Astros, the entire situation was not so ideal, at least for the New York Yankees. Firstly, because the New York Yankees already have a star, Anthony Volpe. They believe he is going to be the next Jeter—the next big shortstop. So why would they get Correa into the mix?

Not to mention Correa’s history of injury, which makes it riskier. He has a severe leg injury and has a metal plate installed. He has bouts of plantar fasciitis repeatedly and a severe back problem. These issues sidelined him last year, and this too. Plus, given that he has a history with the Astros, he will not sit well with the Yankees. The Astros were caught doing a sign-stealing scheme in the 2017 ALCS. And the memory still stings the Yankee crew. Brian Cashman came out recently and said, “Some other organization cheated us when we were in the end,” referring to their loss then. Hence, it’s unlikely they would be taking the player from the time.
