Spring training is almost knocking on the doors! With that, the free-agent market is in its last leg. Max Scherzer is off to the Toronto Blue Jays. Jack Flaherty has landed in Detroit and Ha-Seong Kim has joined the Rays too. Also the latest signing—Pete Alonso is back with his destined home at the New York Mets. Even that happened after a ton of drama. And yet one of the biggest names is still unsigned—Alex Bregman. Surprising or more shocking?

According to FanGraphs Roster Resource, Bregman is the only player projected to post an fWAR over 2.5 in 2025 remaining in the market. And he knows it. Bregman isn’t looking for just any deal—he wants a contract that meets his standards. So, he’s not budging. Now several teams are lined up for him. From the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Toronto has been already aggressive this off-season. While they missed out on Juan Soto, they have landed several key players, including Anthony Santander, Jeff Hoffman, and others. But it seems like they are not done and might land Bregman, that’s what insider Pat Ragazzo reported in his Twitter post. He mentioned, “Keep an eye on the Blue Jays and 3B Alex Bregman,” Ragazzo reported, adding, “Toronto wanted 2 of Scherzer, Alonso, and Bregman.” That’s a bold claim because the Jays missed out on Alonso and Juan Soto, but if they still want to make a splash, Bregman can be their guy. But here is where things get interesting.

The Chicago Cubs are also in on the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. But Ragazzo says that they might not be comfortable making a long-term deal with Bregman. And Bregman, in his 30s, wants nothing right now but a long-term deal to feel secure. Ragazzo mentions, “My opinion: Toronto would be more inclined to give Bregman a longer-term deal than the Cubs who have a tighter budget and 23-year-old top prospect 3B Matt Shaw.” So Cubs might be out of the picture. But Toronto has much to gain with Bregman, let’s not forget that Alex Bregman is a game-changer.

In 2024 itself, Alex Bregman hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI, and a 4.2 WAR. He is also a two-time all-star and even a two-time World Series champion. The bottom line is adding him would be a no-brainer for the Jays, but of course, the question is where Toronto will offer him the money and calendar years he needs. If yes, a move could be in the making. That being said, the Cubs are said to be getting creative with their offer, but it comes with risks for Bregman.

Will Alex Bregman make the risky move to the Chicago Cubs?

Now Alex Bregman is looking for a lucrative deal even at this moment. And given that the Houston Astros aren’t in the race right now, the door is wide open to approach, and the Cubs have slid in. But not everyone in Chicago is thrilled with this interest. Many fans and even analysts believe that Wrigley Field’s dimensions and the unpredictable weather won’t sit well with Bregman who is a right-handed hitter. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers said, “Should avoid the Cubs at all costs.”

According to Cubs Zone, the team is offering Bregman a unique contract. “The Cubs have a ‘creative, potentially unprecedented’ contract offer for Alex Bregman, according to Matthew Trueblood (…) the deal is believed to be worth around $30 million annually over four years, with multiple opt-out options,” Cubs Zone mentioned. Now it’s worth noting that in the entire fiasco, there is another piece—Scott Boras.

Despite having the reputation of a super agent, he couldn’t help secure a massive deal for his client. Boras is known for giving priority to flexibility over long-term contracts. It has worked for Juan Soto, but not all. Then there is a financial hurdle. The Cubs will have to land Bregman without exceeding the CBT threshold. It’s a tricky situation given their payroll condition.
