The Yankees have just traded for Devin Williams and they are not stopping. They got hold of the All-Star after letting go of Nestor Cortes Jr. And Caleb Durbin. However, that’s not all, the squad re-signed Jonathan Loaisaga and Max Fried. Now the Yanks want either Alex Bregman or Cody Bellinger to fill their roster.
The Yanks and the Cubs are certainly in negotiations for Bellinger where he may be traded by the Yankees to play first base. The Cubs owe Bellinger $32.5 million for the 2025 season, but the Yankees want the Cubs to pay at least $10 million of that amount. Nothing is certain yet, but apart from Bellinger, the club is also focusing on getting Alex Bregman.
Brian Cashman’s words suggest the Yanks are making a move on Alex Bregman

Bob Nightingale of USA Today wrote in his article that the pinstripes will be going all in for New Mexico native. He wrote, “The New York Yankees now are expected to put on a full-court press to sign Bregman and move Jazz Chisholm to second base, in what would be their latest big move since losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets in free agency.” Nightingale’s statement also aligned with what Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said about the third baseman. It looks like Cashman made it pretty clear that the past is in the past.

In a conversation with the New York Sports Post, Cashman acknowledged Bregman being a “thorn in our side” for years. There has been a tense history between the Yankees and the Astros, especially after the sign-stealing scandal. But perhaps most telling was the second part of his comment: “I have had a conversation or two with Scott Boras, with a lot of his clients, including Alex Bregman. Certainly a respected player of his ability.” Cashman’s comment suggests that he’s heavily interested in the 30-year-old and the revelation of talking to his agent further proves it.
The Houston Astros are looking for replacements
Alex Bregman may not return to the Houston Astros and that’s probably hard to digest for the Texan MLB team. In that case, who will be the third baseman for Houston? The squad recently acquired Isaac Paredes who could play the position but there’s another option that the crew is looking at. According to The Athletic, the Astros are a “serious suitor” for Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals.

As per The Athletic, the Astros’ interest in Arenado has risen since this week’s Winter Meetings in Dallas. During those meetings, the Cardinals president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, acknowledged that he “intends to try” and move the superstar third baseman. Although no deal is believed to be fixed yet, The Athletic reports that “conversations between the Cardinals and Astros have increased,” suggesting both teams are actively discussing potential trade scenarios.
Nolan Arenado, who has three years remaining on his massive $260 million deal, would be a good replacement for former Houston shortstop. As The Athletic notes, “Arenado is a superstar in his own right and likely would be the closest replacement option for Houston,” should they part ways with Bregman. The 33-year-old would offer Houston an elite defender and a consistent middle-of-the-order bat, both qualities Bregman has provided, although Arenado would likely come at a high price.
