The New York Yankees know one thing—they need a roster shakeup. The World Series run and their loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers were brutal. They weren’t able to give everyone that experience of that dream series like they had hoped for in October. Now, their main agenda is for sure getting one of their cornerstone players, Juan Soto, back to the team. However, they also cannot ignore other positions and only have a linear focus.
The infield is one place that the Yankees need to strengthen. The collapse in World Series Game 5 had highlighted that to be one of their glaring issues. The Yankees have already made Anthony Rizzo a free agent, having declined his $17 million club option. Now, who should be their next watchout? Perhaps Vladimir Guerrero Jr., since he is the most talked about now. Vladimir is talented and is on track to be the next Juan Soto of the off-season, but Michael Kay doesn’t think that’s such a great option.

Christian Walker to the Yankees makes more sense than Vlady
Yankee fans want to dream big, but it seems like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won’t be in pinstripes anytime soon. During Wednesday’s The Michael Kay Show, a caller had asked them if the Yankees could pursue the Blue Jays slugger, to which Kay replied with a clear-cut no and even gave reasons—the first is that Guerrero Jr. has a personal reason not to play with the Yankees—an unresolved issue with his father and the team.

Michael Kay also isn’t convinced that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the perfect fit for the Yankees. “What’s his position? Is he a first baseman? He’s better than he used to be but still not a great one. Are you putting him back at third? You can’t DH him, and he’s going to want a mega contract, like 10 or 11 years.” This move, according to Kay, would complicate the team’s plans to transition Judge to first base.
Instead, Kay gave out another option over Vladimir Guerrero Jr., saying, “If the Yankees are going to get a first baseman. It’s going to be a guy like Christian Walker.” According to Kay, it makes sense for the Yankees to sign a two-year deal with Walker and eventually move Aaron Judge to first base. However, if they sign somebody long-term, what happens with Judge is unclear.

Is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. worth the drama, or should the Yankees focus on more practical options?

Should the Yankees go to Yandy Díaz for the first base?
MLB Network’s Jim Bowden has also pitched in his guess about what can happen to the Yankees’ first base. He shared two options; of course, Christian Walker is an option put forth by him too, and second, Yandy Diaz. According to Bowden, either of those players could fill the void left by Rizzo. “If they can’t sign free agent Christian Walker, perhaps a smaller deal, like a trade with the Rays for Díaz, could make sense,” Bowden noted, and it does make sense, given that Walker, though an ideal fit, comes with a high price tag.

Diaz, on the other hand, will be a great budget-friendly yet great addition to the team. Plus, the Yankees were interested in Diaz before too, during the trade deadline. Diaz is just 33 and has slashed .281/.341/.414 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs last season. Though he lacks that power bat, his consistency and professionalism sure are too good to ignore. So, the New York Yankees have much to think about this off-season.
