The New York Yankees’ pitching plans took a wrong turn this week. With Gerrit Cole unavailable for Opening Day, perhaps even longer. With this crisis of an elbow injury, acquiring a proven starter became a priority. However, their pursuit of the 28-year-old Dylan Cease has seemingly hit a dead end. Thanks to Yankee, Juan Soto’s ex-team.

The San Diego Padres swooped in to acquire him in a 5-player trade with the Chicago White Sox. However, whispers are that this was not the usual give and take. There could be a more intricate three-team deal involving the Yank and rising star Mike King. Now that’s some food for thought.

The Chicago White Sox would have been the biggest winners. They’d have received a package of young prospects from San Diego to bolster their efforts to rebuild their team. The Padres would have landed their much-desired starting pitcher – Cease. This would’ve solidified their rotation to compete aggressively with the NL West teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. Now, comes the interesting bit.

Additionally some offensive pieces would have joined them in their journey to San Diego. But, this intricate dance, seems to have ended with no grand finale.

Or was there another unveiled reason for the three-team trade to not materialize? Whether this idea actually sprouted or not, one thing is clear, the Yankees are in a dire need of a pitcher.
