The Polar Bear is again making the headlines, albeit for a lot of good reasons. After a long tenure with the New York Mets, he has found himself in a situation where his sweepstakes are shrinking. He is seeking a long-term contract, but the Mets are unwilling to pay him. So, what’s on the cards now?

Pete Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, has offered a new contract to the Mets. This is unexpected in light of all the rumors and speculations surrounding Alonso’s free agency. However, this new approach can also draw the attention of other teams. And, guess what? The Boston Red Sox are on the lookout.

The New York Mets had previously declined Pete’s long-term contract demands, given his 30 years of age, considering the uncertainty regarding his performance in the next couple of years. Because there are no suitors for a long-term contract, Pete’s agent, Scott Boras, made a bold move. He tweaked the existing contract and offered a three-year deal including opt-out options. An MLB insider, Brandon Tierney, said, Pete’s camp has gone to the Mets with a short-term deal.” He feels that the deal should be done. Would it?

Brandon went on to add that the short-term deal gives Pete Alonso an opportunity to stay on the radar of multiple teams. Additionally, if the Mets are looking for a reunion, they might even increase the contract for another year or maybe a few million. But that’s not all! Given that he is now open to a shorter deal, the teams that were on the fence because of his long-term expectations might start negotiating now. Say, the Red Sox, who are already planning to get the first baseman?

Boston Red Sox’s hunt for their first baseman continues

In the game of the first base musical chair, multiple teams are in pursuit of Pete Alonso. And the Red Sox appear to be the front-runner. Pete’s addition makes sense given his stellar season, including .240 batting average, 34 home runs, and .788 OPS in 162 games. They are willing to trade Nolan Arenado and get Alonso. In that case, the Red Sox might have to move Rafael Devers and trade Triston Casas. However, would that be ideal?

Triston Casas, the first baseman for the Red Sox, has only managed to hit 16 home runs so far in 2024. This is something to worry about for the Red Sox, who intend to get him off the table in an Arenado trade. While his time with the team might end, top MLB insider Jon Heyman made some surprising revelations surrounding Boston’s link with Alonso. He sheds light on how Pete’s wife, Haley, a native of Boston, can influence his decision in the free-agency trade. Her desire to see him at home may undoubtedly have some influence.

But will that be enough to call it a reality? Guess not! With the new short-term offer placed by Pete Alonso’s camp, the Mets might just bring him back. Also, Pete might not be willing to leave his fans heartbroken. Isn’t it? Let’s have a little talk over it, shall we!
