Often, when one is slowly running out of bullets, calling a ceasefire while still in a strong position is a smart decision. This helps to keep one’s illusion of power intact. What if Scott Boras and his client Cody Bellinger are heading toward that exact destination? From pressure to constant praise, Boras has done it all, but the Chicago Cubs and others aren’t buying what he’s selling.

The chief problem being encountered by Boras currently is that the teams just don’t value his clients as highly as he does. There’s plenty of interest, but his clients are priced out of that market. Now with the Cubs looking elsewhere as well, Boras and Bellinger have a decision to make: do we call a ceasefire or do we continue growing increasingly isolated?

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, while Cody Bellinger remains an obvious signing for them, Matt Chapman is slowly becoming a favorite as well. Although still seen as an alternative, one won’t be surprised if the Cubs decide to go for this other Boras client if Bellinger and the superagent remain adamant in their over $200 million contract.

The Cubs already lost a backup option in Rhys Hoskins a few hours ago. While one could argue that it could’ve played a role in increasing the North Side’s urgency for Bellinger, what if it played another role as well? What if, after losing one safe and cheap option, the Cubs decide not to let another one get out of their hands as well?

If that happens, it could be a hugely alarming sign for Boras. Ever since the offseason began, the Cubs and Boras have been in a staring contest regarding Cody Bellinger. Boras wants over $200 million, and the Cubs are unwilling, especially because everyone else is. The lack of competition is benefiting the Cubbies right now, and Boras sees it as well.

He has tried everything except lowering the price of Bellinger. One could argue that the agent is ensuring the best possible deal for his client. But in a quiet market, is putting your client out of everyone’s reach an appropriate strategy?

Why lowering the price of Cody Bellinger could benefit him?

There’s no shortage of teams interested in Bellinger. The likes of the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Angels are all in the race. Interestingly, if Boras reduces the price, he could create a bidding war. Everyone knows a bidding war is the best possible chance for a player to increase his value.

There’s no reason to doubt Boras. He’s been in this game for three decades and knows every trick in the book. Maybe he has another trick up his sleeve, but in complex warfare, is he forgetting the basics of war?
