Rumors surrounding third baseman Nolan Arenado’s links with the Boston Red Sox have acquired traction. MLB insider Buster Olney confirmed Arenado’s interest in signing with the Boston Red Sox; however, there’s a major roadblock in front of him—the Red Sox’s fans are hoping for a projected $120 million superstar to land in Boston—Alex Bregman.

With spring training to commence soon, the St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman, Nolan Arenado, is keen to secure a trade with the Red Sox, emerging to be the perfect landing spot. But given that the Houston Astros’ Alex Bregman hasn’t found any takers yet, the Red Sox are eyeing his services too. Due to this, speculations continue to build around the discussions between the Red Sox and the Cardinals, while Arenado’s transition to AL remains undercover.

Over the years, Nolan Arenado has made significant contributions to the St. Louis Cardinals, earning a Gold Glove Award or being named to the All-Star team each year. But, in 2024, Arenado was not able to replicate the same magic as before, which eventually led to the Cardinals missing the playoffs for the second consecutive time. In the past ten seasons, Arenado has hit.272/.325/.394 slash line, 71 RBIs, and 16 home runs.

Now, given his interest in joining hands with the Red Sox, on February 6, Olney noted, “Given that Nolan Arenado vetoed the potential deal to the Astros, what some of his friends say is important: They think he would really like the idea of going to the Red Sox if Boston and the Cardinals work out terms. Arenado’s current mindset: “Highly, highly motivated.” Olney believes that Arenado’s interest in the Red Sox indicates why he decided not to join the Astros.

Will the Red Sox choose Arenado's experience over Bregman's potential to break their playoff drought?

Olney went on to say that given that the Boston Red Sox have been unable to reach the playoffs three consecutive times, they will look to grab this opportunity in hand. However, the main problem lies in the availability of the Astros; Alex Bregman, who has remained a free agent due to his contract desire not being fulfilled by any other teams. In 2024, Bregman slashed. 260/. 315/. 453, with 635 plate appearances, 26 home runs, 30 doubles, and 75 RBIs, which makes him a favorite.

The Red Sox emerges as a major contender for Bregman

While fans await the situation to unfold and see what fate lies for Alex Bregman, who hasn’t found any takers yet, the Boston Red Sox are looking for a right-handed batter. They have been exploring multiple options; however, the main focus remains on the free-agent third baseman, Alex Bregman. Despite his major contribution to the Astros in helping them to win the World Series two times, the Astros-Bregman reunion looks unlikely after he declined a major offer put on his table. So, what lies ahead of Bregman now?

Well, if the Red Sox want Alex Bregman, they would have to make the right call as soon as possible. However, if their top prospect, Kristian Campbell, makes an early debut at second base, it would be a more realistic long-term option. However, rumors of the Red Sox’s link with the New York Mets’ All-Star, Pete Alonso, are also doing the rounds.

Although he might not be perfect for the Red Sox, getting a player of his caliber would not cater to their need for a right-handed batter but could also improve their roster. It is all uncertain considering that if Alex Bregman joins another team, will the Red Sox try to re-enter Alonso’s sweepstakes?
