With four wins in seven games, the New York Mets have started their Spring Training reasonably well. However, it’s behind the scenes where chaos has suddenly erupted. The team was already suffering from a less-than-ideal starting lineup, but they were somehow powering through it. But then the universe was in a funny mood and gave Kodai Senga an injury. Now the Mets are panicking, and the universe has grabbed on to its popcorn.

At this stage of the offseason, the Mets have two options: either they hope for an early recovery of Senga or they go for a quick fix. This means a new signing could be on the cards for the Metsies. Interestingly, rumors have already begun swirling around the neighborhood. Luckily, All-Star Michael Lorenzen is available, and the Mets could be going after him.

The New York Mets search for comfort in the chaos

It has been a chaotic few months for the Mets. Senga’s injury is just the tip of the iceberg. The Mets’ entire organization has struggled through transitions and huge trades. The acute shortage of starting pitchers makes it hard to believe that the Mets won’t make another signing. That sentiment immediately pulled up the name of Michael Lorenzen as a potential acquisition. Then reports came that the Mets had checked up on him.

Rising Apple’s Tim Boyle noted how the rumors could turn out to be true. Lorenzen does suit the Mets’ needs. “Lorenzen could fit best as a competitor for the fifth starter role to begin the season and a bullpen arm thereafter,” the writer said. It’s not tough to see how that makes sense. It would be quite easy for Lorenzen to fit in, especially if he brings his Detroit Tigers form to New York.

In his 18 starts with the Tigers, Lorenzen put up an impressive 3.58 ERA. That made him an All-Star. Even when the Philadelphia Phillies traded him, Lorenzen threw a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals in his first home start. However, his form began shaking after this, and he ended up posting a disappointing 5.51 ERA in 11 games.

But there’s another question that’s worth asking as well: does Lorenzen improve the Mets’ pitching staff?

How can the Kings of the Queens benefit from Michael Lorenzen?

Despite what their rotation suggests, the Mets’ bullpen isn’t quite empty. They have improved it a lot this offseason. However, Lorenzen could play a decisive role if he signs with the team. Due to a shortage of starters, the bullpen could get a unique opportunity this season. The Mets will require more spot starters, and that’s where the experience of Lorenzen will come in handy.

But before that, the Mets will have to sign him. Even though Lorenzen is coming through a bad patch with the Phillies, he still expects a nice deal. Is David Stearns willing to offer that? Fans sure hope that he does. Until then, the chaos within the Mets continues, but comfort could be coming soon.
