Is David Stearns' focus on pitching over big hitters the right move for the Mets' future?

What are the Mets thinking? Apparently nobody knows. The Mets’ strategy is turning to be a mystery for all of us. The executives of the baseball world don’t believe that the president of Mets baseball operations, David Stearn is keen in paying a huge amount of money to the players in free agency. There are rumors that Juan Soto’s contract could go up to $700 million where as Pete Alonso’s for $200 million. That’s a high price.

Instead, there is chatter that he may be more interested in spending the money elsewhere. First, by signing Walker Buehler. Then maybe on a third baseman like Alex Bregman whose deal is likely to be in the budget. But to procure Alex Bregman, they have to first shift their own third baseman. Mark Vientos. The third baseman of the Mets may be moved to first base to create space for Bregman.

Will Juan Soto be pursued by the Mets?

A contradictory move is that Mets owner Steve Cohen plans to personally meet once in the next week. So, according to USA Today, even if David Stearn is not ‘interested’ in spending his team money on such a large player, Cohen could make him do otherwise. Everyone knows how valuable Juan Soto is and they are willing to pay for it. The deal of Soto total is rumored to be very close to a deal like Shohei Ohtani’s. While every team is trying its best to procure Soto, baseball executives, believe there will only be four teams who will be the finalists.

The Yankees, the Mets, the San Francisco Giants, and the Toronto Blue Jays. While David Stearn may be having mixed feelings about Juan Soto and his big contract, he has made his feelings clear about one player though. Yesterday it was announced that the player will be posted into the MLB. Roki Sasaki is a 23-year-old Japanese pitcher. His team in Japan announced that he is making a move to MLB. All 30 teams will be ready to jump on him, and some already have. David Stearn went personally to scout him and called it ‘uncharted territory’.

What’s your perspective on:

Is David Stearns' focus on pitching over big hitters the right move for the Mets' future?

Have an interesting take?

All teams’ eyes lie on another player now

Roki Sasaki’s decision to enter the MLB posting is a major development in the baseball world, and the New York Mets are certainly among the teams that are waiting at the prospect of adding the 23-year-old phenom to their rotation. Known as “The Monster” in Japan, Sasaki has been impressing scouts and fans alike. Sasaki has already achieved remarkable success in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), including a perfect game in 2022 and multiple no-hitters.

For the Mets, who have historically invested heavily in pitching, adding someone like Sasaki could be a transformative move. Their starting rotation could benefit greatly from a top-tier, young arm, and Sasaki could be the centerpiece of their pitching staff for years to come. The Mets, along with other teams, will now likely prepare for a competitive bidding process. It’s no surprise that both the New York Mets and New York Yankees have extreme interest in Rōki

The fact that David Stearns personally traveled to Japan to watch him pitch in September says a lot. Stearns has a reputation for being a strategic, big-picture thinker, so his interest in Sasaki is a clear signal that the Mets are focused on building their future around elite pitching. Sasaki’s unique talent, as Stearns described it, certainly checks off a lot of boxes for a team like the Mets. Which team do you think would be the better fit for Sasaki?
