This is a pivotal offseason for the Boston Red Sox. Clearly, their sight is set on one of the most coveted free-agent pitchers on the market – Jordan Montgomery. Apart from the fact that Monty’s stellar 2023 season and World Series championship ring are enticing, there is something else that might give the Red Sox an edge. A rather surprising twist! 

Enter McKenzie Dirr, Montgomery’s wife, a Harvard-affiliated medical professional. Not only did she study dermatology there but also started her residency at a Boston hospital. Well, on one hand, Montgomery did his part, boasting a 3.20 ERA, 166 strikeouts, and 10 wins in 2023. Now it’s time for his wife’s ‘Boston Factor’ to play out. 

Dr. Dirr in Fenway – A Match Made in Beantown?

McKenzie’s association with this Ivy League school, conjunct with the couple’s recent move to Boston, has some advantages. MLB Insider Jon Heyman has seen signs of a potential Red Sox landing. While Heyman believes that having a home in Beantown and his wife’s history in Beantown, the “Boston factor” could be a game-changer for Monty’s 2024 season. 

Apart from personal ties, the 31-year-old’s pitching prowess speaks for itself. In his past season, he dominated both the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers. Given that, he’d be an immediate ace in Boston’s rotation. He is capable of adding the much-needed strikeout muscle and bolstering their offense he deserves more wins. But this is a cautious pursuit. 

This season has been proof that the Red Sox are taking each step carefully in the free agent market. CEO Sam Kennedy has given insights that justify this caution. Boston.com reported, “Speaking prior to Red Sox Winter Weekend, the CEO (Sam Kennedy) told the media the team’s payroll for this season will ‘probably be lower’ than it was in 2023. The payroll last year was $225 million.” Could this financial constraint push them towards a more economical option?
