The Houston Astros are in a fix right now. Alex Bregman, their gem of a third baseman is approaching the final year of his contract. While both sides want a deal, there is a major gulf between them that might lead them to part ways. Will the club be able to comply with the World Series champion’s $300 million request

One must not forget the Astros tradition. They have a reputation for making modest extension offerings, not exceeding six years or $150 million. Though this is a fiscally conservative approach, they’d have to overcome having their hands tied. Because Bregman is 29 and holds a high potential. If the Stros fail to deliver his ask, could the Albuquerque-born bid farewell to Houston?

Enter Scott Boras Bregman’s agent and a notorious dealmaker! He is someone who is unlikely to settle for anything less than market value. Boras has the ability to push the Astros out of their comfort zone, making solid negotiation terms. Now given Bregman’s age, talent, impact, and loyalty to the Astros, there is no doubt that he’s the prime candidate for a mega-contract. This might put loads of pressure on Houston putting pressure on the Astros.

This pressure could go either way for the Astros. The worst-case scenario would be losing him which would be a significant blow. One cannot deny that he’s a core piece of their championship puzzle. Not only is he a feared hitter but also a defensive wizard. It is only his foreseen mammoth contract that poses a threat.

The club could weigh their aspirations for the Championship and their desire for a long-term financial certainty. Though the decision is still a year away, this situation could push them to contemplate not having the #2 third baseman on board. In that case, will a compromise bridge the gap?
