Buster Posey is wasting no time making his mark as the new president of baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants. According to recent sources, the new president of baseball operations is attempting to sign Corbin Burnes, the best starting player available in the Bay Area. The San Francisco Giants will have Burnes and Logan Webb at the top of their rotation going into 2025 if they are successful in adding a new ace to the bay. What about the Red Sox, though? They were the favorites to land Burnes!
However, the Red Sox haven’t been able to sign any big names thus far, so it is unlikely they would sign Burnes. The Giants, on the other hand, have made headlines by acquiring players like Blake Snell, Jung Hoo Lee, and Jorge in the past years. Nothing has worked thus far, so in order to kick off the new Buster Posey era, they most recently signed Willy Adames—maybe, signing the starting pitcher is all the crew needs to make them a threat to others.
The Giants are considered to be geographically fit for Corbin Burnes

During his recent exchange on the Foul Territory podcast, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic remarked on how the Giants are a right fit for Corbin Burnes, saying, “It seems to me that the logical landing spot is San Francisco. He is a guy who has a home in Arizona. He went Saint Mary’s in the Bay Area. He’s from Bakersfield, California. People in the industry believes he wants to go out West.” However, one key factor could complicate the situation: The Giants would need to manage their budget carefully if they were to land Burnes.

The only frontline starter still available is Burnes. Max Fried got an eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees, and Blake Snell signed a five-year, $182 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. So, where does that leave the Bakersfield native? Scott Boras, Burnes’ agent, will leverage these two deals and get him the best he can. Although the Giants could be seen as a good option geographically, other teams can also grab the Baltimore Orioles’ pitcher, including the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays may also grab the Cy-Young winner
The Blue Jays need a top starting pitcher, and there is one available—Corbin Burnes, who also may be the Blue Jays’ last shot since Max Fried and Blake Snell have both agreed to long-term contracts. Just a few days ago, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com claimed that the Jays are the “favorite” and that they are pursuing the former Cy Young winner with immense aggression. However, for the Toronto Blue Jays fans, disappointment has become too familiar.

Year after year, the Blue Jays have tried to land emerging stars but fallen short at the last moment. After narrowly missing out on Shohei Ohtani last offseason and more recently losing out on Juan Soto and Max Fried, the fanbase could be growing impatient. The Blue Jays starting rotation is already filled with talent; with veterans like José Berríos, Kevin Gausman, and Chris Bassitt, alongside up-and-comers like Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodríguez, Toronto’s pitching staff has a solid foundation.
But to truly challenge for a championship, the team needs that one proven arm—that’s where 30-year-old Corbin Burnes comes into play. One of the best pitchers in baseball, he could be exactly what the Blue Jays need to put the team over the top. Adding Burnes to the rotation would allow them to not only upgrade their starting staff but also improve the depth of the bullpen by shifting someone like Rodríguez into a relief role. For a franchise that has come so close in recent years but often fallen short in the race for top-tier talent, this opportunity to land Burnes would be huge.
