The New York Mets’ Polar Bear is in the news again! Pete Alonso seems to have made a special offer to the Mets’ front office. The contract negotiations between them are in the final stages; Pete was looking for at least a six-year contract, which the Mets weren’t very sure about. Alonso’s camp reportedly offered a three-year contract with opt-outs.

The Mets were not interested in the existing offer because Pete is already thirty years old and his performance over the next three or four years is uncertain. Thus, it remains a question whether the Mets will be interested in this new offer or not. However, amid all the speculations, will they show interest in another $80 million free agent, or will other teams? Say, Anthony Santander?

Pete Alonso has a tremendous record with the New York Mets; in addition to hitting his highest ground-ball rate of 42%, he made 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. However, given that the Mets aren’t willing to offer him the amount he’s seeking, a three-year contract with the flexibility of opting out is being considered. Although the offer has been put on the table for the Mets, there is no confirmation yet. So, what’s causing the delay that keeps the fans speculating?

The Polar Bear’s performance over the past two years has been a little erratic. Despite being a major player in the Mets’ lineup, he struggled to get to the base. That’s what allows him to go for the opt-out clauses to predict his value in the market before regaining his form. However, that’s not all—Jon Morosi, on January 10, said,What is being stalled in the Pete Alonso market could create a market for the Mets to get involved with the Anthony Santander sweepstakes.

He went on to add that if Pete Alonso doesn’t go back to the Flushing Queens and Santander remains unsold, he could be a potential option. In that case, the Mets might move Mark Vientos to first base and Brett Baty to third. But, as there haven’t been any fruitful discussions yet, it’s unfair to speculate anything about it. Another important batter would still be needed by the New York Mets, and Anthony Santander might be the ideal addition. However, that’s not all; the Detroit Tigers, Blue Jays, and Angels are also interested in Santander.

Detroit Tigers look to get Anthony Santander for a hefty contract

What’s your perspective on:

Could Anthony Santander be the game-changer the Mets need, or is Alonso still their best bet?

Have an interesting take?

The MLB offseason is making all the right noise with some game-changing moments. But there is one player in particular who is attracting a lot of attention: Anthony Santander, an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles. Anthony has displayed his strengths as a power-hitter, scoring 44 home runs and 102 RBIs in 2024 with a.235 batting average. With this impressive record, he positions himself as a strong hitter with great offensive abilities, which boosts the Orioles’ lineup.

Thus, he drew the attention of teams like the Tigers, Mets, and Blue Jays. However, the Detroit Tigers seem to be the strongest contender in this race. Their lukewarm performance in 2024 is a reason to blame, as they failed to win the AL Championship series title. Although they made some additions like Alex Cobb and Gleyber Torres, they need a middle-order batter who could hit strong. As a powerful hitter, Anthony Santander could bridge the gap in the Tigers’ lineup and help them win. However, that’s not a final call yet!

The Toronto Blue Jays come out of nowhere and show interest in Santander. Based on reports, they already made an offer to him. After a disappointing season, adding a powerhouse of Anthony’s caliber makes sense. His steady offensive prowess and ability to perform well under pressure can significantly improve the team. However, the Blue Jays are known for their failures to close certain deals, and that’s what hinders their dreams of remaining in contention in AL East.
