The San Francisco Giants – Oakland Athletics cross-bay move has sparked speculation. There is possibly a bigger move ensuing. The foundation of this speculation was laid when the Giants traded Ross Stripling to the Athletics, creating a buzz around Blake Snell’s potential movement. If this isn’t a stepping stone toward addressing the club’s glaring need for rotation depth, then what is?

Well, the trade in itself focused on salary relief and prospect acquisition. However, it could be San Francisco’s one-stop solution. A $12.5 million in payroll made up for Stripling’s departure fees. That has potentially provided the financial flexibility to pursue a high-impact arm like Snell. Could this be “one of the highest-upside rotations in baseball”?

On one hand, the possibility of a door opening for Blake Snell to move to the Bay Area seems plausible. On the other hand, FanSided’s Robert Murray measured a 5/10 fit for Snell in the Giants. He acknowledged the upside of such a move, keeping in mind a rotation with “one of the highest-upside rotations in baseball” with Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Kyle Harrison, and Robbie Ray in the picture.

San Francisco’s current rotation lacks depth, particularly with Cobb and Ray sidelined due to their recent injuries. It is important to note that, though possible, Stripling’s departure doesn’t guarantee a Snell trade. Rather, it signifies exploring other options and likely making an investment in starting pitching.

Having said that, it is key to look at why a Snell deal could actually be a good fit. Snell’s expertise as a Cy Young Award winner is unmatched. Moreover, he possesses a potent fastball and strikeout ability, which addresses the Giants’ need for a frontline starter on point. The 31-year-old is expecting a little over $200 million, which makes it an ideal time for the SanFrans to step in. Though there are clear upsides to having him on board, one can’t overlook the downsides.

Challenges That the San Francisco Giants Must Take Into Account

Well, the lefty has had some struggles, but his talent remains undeniable. While a change of scenery could surely revitalize his career, the club must take into account his past setbacks. Snell has grappled with injuries throughout his career, raising a question – Is he durable? Integrating the Seattle-born into the existing rotation would need adjustments and potentially pushing other young pitchers down the depth chart.

Eventually, the Giants’ call will depend on their risk appetite and tolerance, budgetary constraints, and an overall vision for the pitching staff. By trading Stripling away, they might not have arrived at the final piece just yet, but it sure suggests that the Giants are open to exploring avenues to vamp up their rotation. The easy choice on the table is Blake Snell.
