The heart wants one thing, but the mind is sending mixed signals. That’s the situation of the New York Yankees regarding the Cy Young winner Blake Snell. On one hand, having Snell in their rotation is a delicious possibility, but on the other hand, the cost of it could be too high to bear. In this battle of wish and reality, one wonders who is it that will lay down their weapons first.

Ever since Snell rejected the Yankees’ offer, their connection has remained quiet. While Snell focused on other suitors, the Pinstripes went ahead and signed Marcus Stroman. So speculations had grown that maybe the interest of the Bombers was over. If only things were this simple, there’s a lot more in this story than what meets the eye.

Mixed Signals – A positive or a negative?

One key feature of the Yankees – Blake Snell connection has been the conflicting reports that have surrounded their talks. Some believed they were close, but few thought it was just a momentary infatuation. While initial reports indicated the Yankees had offered a 5-year, $150 million deal, later it was revealed it was a 6-year offer. Those conflicting reports haven’t ended yet with famous insider Jon Heyman and USA Today’s Gabe Lacques being far apart in their prediction.

Jon Heyman was quite clear in his assessment regarding these links. “They (Snell and Yankees) were very far apart. The Yankees for now are saying they’ve signed Stroman and they feel good about their rotation. Not likely they’d go back and revisit (Snell).” However, on one condition: if Snell lowers his asking value. Jon’s clear lack of excitement spoke volumes about Yankees’ disinterest in pursuing further connection.

So while Heyman had barely kept the doors open, things were wildly different in Gabe Lacques’ world. “Snell swallows some pride and the Yankees sweeten their offer just a bit to create enviable, if unpredictive, rotation depth,” predicted Lacques. Not only was he positive, but his belief was strong enough that he predicted that Snell would sign with the Yankees.

This kind of mixed signal has forever surrounded the Snell free agency. But at least the two insiders have similar opinions regarding one thing – the price of Blake Snell.

Could Blake Snell still attract the New York Yankees?

The alleged $240-$270 million expectations of Snell have met with crickets across the league. It’s not that the teams don’t rate him, but the current market doesn’t permit such huge expenses. A price reduction would go a long way in improving the rate of interest in Snell. This is something that both insiders alluded to as well.

Could a price reduction excite the Yankees? Possibly. Despite signing Marcus Stroman, there’s still a lot of uncertainty in the Bombers’ lineup. Snell, at his worst, is still an above-average pitcher, and that’s exactly what the Yankees need. The real question is – can Snell make the Bronx Squad compete with other suitors if a bidding war ensues?
