Could Alex Bregman be the missing piece to finally end the Phillies' postseason heartbreak?

Alex Bregman has got another potential suitor it seems. The Philadelphia Phillies could make major news by signing Alex Bregman this offseason. The Phillies currently have no immediate opening at third base, but they could make way by trading Alec Bohm, who is reportedly on the block, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. On the surface, Bohm and Bregman posted similar numbers in 2024.

Both players are solid defensively, but here’s where Bregman separates himself: his Gold Glove-caliber defense at third base. Add in his wealth of World Series experience, an asset for a Phillies team that’s come close but fallen short in recent postseason runs. Suddenly, Alex Bregman becomes the kind of difference-maker that could put Philadelphia at the top.

While the Houston Astros have made it clear that re-signing Bregman is their top priority, the star third baseman isn’t expected to make a decision any time soon. According to Buster Olney on X, he wrote, “The most interesting prediction heard from a rival evaluator: The Phillies land Alex Bregman. His swing translates in that park, strong defense, lots of postseason scar tissue.” But it’s not just his talent on the field that makes him such a perfect fit, it’s his postseason experience.

After years of playoff heartbreak, the Phillies could use a battle-tested veteran with Bregman’s resume. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand even said during a Reddit AMA that he sees Bregman’s chances of staying in Houston as a coin flip. Could the Phillies pounce on the opportunity to upgrade at third and add a seasoned winner to their roster?

It seems a lot of teams are interested, not just the Phillies. Bregman is a good fit for the Tigers, where he could play under manager A.J. Hinch, but the Astros are quite likely to re-sign their star third baseman. If the Blue Jays don’t get Soto, they will be looking out as well.

Despite surgery, Bregman plans to return with full power

Astros general manager Dana Brown is positive that his team has a good chance of re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman. He stated, “I think we have a really good chance,” following multiple talks. However, while the optimism is there, word around the league is that nothing is permanent yet. Bregman’s better performance in the second half of the season strengthened his free-agent case.

His free-agent stock received a major boost after Matt Chapman, secured a six-year, $151 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. With Bregman’s combination of bat, defense, and postseason experience, his next deal could top that figure. Recently, at the general managers’ meetings in San Antonio, agent Scott Boras confirmed that third baseman Alex Bregman recently underwent surgery. Boras reassured reporters that the procedure went smoothly, adding, “He’s had his procedure. He’s going to be back swinging here in a few weeks, so he’s all through that process.”

Bregman had to remove a bone chip from his right elbow. While the Houston Astros have remained tight-lipped on the specifics, they made it clear that any further details would come directly from Bregman’s camp from now on. Despite the surgery, the timeline for Bregman’s recovery appears positive, and he’s expected to be fully ready for action well ahead of the upcoming season.
