The Houston Astros are in a critical fix this offseason with Alex Bregman’s future with the team in limbo. Now that he is a free agent, the team has made it clear—they want to re-sign their star third baseman. This is a top priority for the team, but things are not going as planned, given multiple teams are interested in him. Plus, getting Bregman might require them to break the bank. The Astros’s previous record for contract extensions lies at five years and $151 million, which they shelled for Jose Altuve.
Considering the value of Bregman, the number could be $200 million. Owner Jim Cran revealed that the franchise is willing to exceed the luxury tax budget if need be. However, there is a problem—it turns out that Bregman isn’t just taking offers from the Astros. Jon Heyman reported that although the Astros have made an offer already, teams like the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox are also interested in Alex Bregman.

Alex Bregman is coming off a strong 2024 season; he is considered one of the best when it comes to the defensive third baseman role in the MLB. And hence. Bregman’s asking price is also skyrocketing, and an 11-year deal above the $200 or $300 million threshold is making the rounds. This might be too expensive for some teams, but for the Red Sox, this might just be a good fit.
The Boston Red Sox are extremely aggressive this off-season. Considering their fierce pursuit of Juan Soto, if the Red Sox can battle it out for Soto, then for Bregman, it’s a sure possibility. Heyman backed this possibility; as per the New York Post, he noted, “The Red Sox inquired and could be a fit for Bregman if they move Rafael Devers to first.” Heyman also explained that Bregman can come in if their current star, Rafael Devers, moves to first base.
Now, the Red Sox might have the dollars, but it might be worth rethinking the lineup first. Another option would be for Bregman to go to second base, a position that the Boston Red Sox is anyway looking to upgrade. If Bregman agrees, the Red Sox roster will be perfectly balanced, but it remains yet to see if both stars are ready to let go.

The Detroit Tigers are also in the race for Alex Bregman, adding more competition for the Red Sox and the Houston Astros. Heyman, in the same article, reported that the Tigers are excited to have a chance for Bregman to reunite with manager A.J. Hinch. Bregman had worked with him in Houston. However, there is a problem, and that’s the steep price of Bregman, and it could be a tough pill to swallow for Detroit.

“Ultimately, Bregman might be pricey for Detroit,” Heyman mentioned. Bregman is reportedly looking for a deal similar to Manny Machado’s massive 11-year, $350 million contract, which could be a tough pill for Detroit to swallow. The Detroit Tigers have been using Matt Vierling and Zach McKinstry at third base. While they are outstanding players, adding Bregman would be just another leveling up.

Alex Bregman brings with him a gold-level defense, and he is also a great hitter, making him a perfect add-on to a team that’s all in all on the younger side. But the big question now is whether Detroit can make a competitive offer; right now, the Red Sox seem to be in the process of creating the winning team in MLB, and money isn’t big of an issue for them.
