After Juan Soto’s stellar deal, Alex Bregman is one big name in the off-season. Yet, there is plenty of confusion about where he will end up, and it is pretty much still up in the air. The biggest reason is the contract he is expecting, a whopping $200 million. As a Houston Astros fan favorite, many want them to re-sign the star back. However, the owner of the Astros, Jim Crane, isn’t known to allow such monstrous contracts. Plus, they offered Bregman an initial offer of $156 million, which he rejected.

However, right now, things don’t look good for him because the market is kind of closing in, and the Astros recently signed Christian Walker for $60. Now, while the Astros haven’t officially waived the white flag on their stellar star, it’s almost a sign that this is it for Bregman in the Astros. Ken Rosenthal said, “Would almost certainly mean Bregman is gone from Houston.” However, certain teams still need a player as stellar as Bregman, and it seems like the New York Mets are interested.

Alex Bregman to the Mets?

According to Mike Mayer of Metsmerized, the Mets are keeping a close eye on Bregman. Mayer shared on X, “Sources: Mets continue to show interest in Alex Bregman. They’re a legitimate potential landing spot for the infielder.” Thus, this reaffirms the Mets’ serious interest in the star infielder. And truly, if Bregman joins the Mets, it could shake up their roster. This is because Pete Alonso might be on the outs if Bregman makes it to the Mets. In such a scenario, Mark Vientos can shift to first base, offering flexibility to the lineup.

Even MLB insider Mark Feinsand had written, “Clubs in on Bregman to varying degrees include the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Blue Jays.” So the New York Mets are definitely in, and it’s not hard to see why. Bergman has been a great hitter throughout his career, rarely striking out more than 97 times per season.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Bregman worth the $200 million gamble, or are the Astros right to let him go?

His bat could protect Juan Soto, who has been recently acquired by the Mets. Additionally, Bregman, paired with Francisco Lindor, is a dream defensive duo on the left side of the infield. If the New York Mets believe Bregman’s slightly off 2024 season was just an anomaly, now would be the perfect time to make a move. Meanwhile, rumors are also dropping that even the New York Yankees are interested.

On Saturday, the New York Yankees finalized a deal with free-agent first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, securing him for one year at $12.5 million. This move was a day after the Houston Astros signed Christian Walker. GM Brian Cashman opted for a more affordable option at first base and passed on power hitters like Pete Alonso. But really, this could be a well-thought-out move.

This is because by keeping the first base affordable, the team has had more financial flexibility to target an upgrade at the third base. A position that they have meant to address for the longest time. And enter Alex Bregman, the Houston Astros long-time stellar third baseman. He is also on the priority list for the New York Yankees. Plus, Brian Cashman has talked with Scott Boras, agent of Alex Bregman. So something might be cooking!

If Bregman joins the New York Yankees, he would not just provide an upgrade at third base but also let Jazz Chisolm Jr. slide over to his second base position. This can help improve the infield’s both defensive and offensive parts, as Bregman is an upgrade over former Gleyber Torres. Now Jon Heyman from The New York Post predicts Bregman to land a $170 million deal.

With this latest move, the Yankees and Mets should now be viewed as the favorites to clinch Bregman. It remains to be seen what happens. Let us know your thoughts.
