Could Pete Alonso's departure be the Mets' biggest blunder in recent history?

The situation around Pete Alonso’s future with the New York Mets has fans scratching their heads. Recent reports hinted that Mets President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, might be reluctant to commit significant funds to either Juan Soto or Pete Alonso. However, it appears the Mets may be prioritizing Soto, as a prominent MLB insider claims Stearns is more interested in pursuing the star outfielder than going all-in on Alonso.

Alongside the Dominican player, Corbin Burnes has also emerged as a priority for the Mets’ rotation, which would indeed be a dream scenario for the team and fans alike. But the real question remains: are the Mets actually prepared to let go of Alonso without even making him an offer?

Considering Pete Alonso’s deep connection to the Mets, the arising buzz could be difficult for him to digest. After all, fans hoped that he would remain a long-term fixture at Citi Field. According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, the Mets may not be eager to bring Pete Alonso back.

Although details of Alonso’s extension talks remain unclear, Bowden’s recent comments on X suggest that the Mets are focused on bolstering their defense at third base, signaling their intent to make improvements at that position. This shift would likely mean that the current third baseman could be moved to a different role, with Mark Vientos taking on a new position as well.

The Mets seem to have their sights set on Alex Bregman as a primary target and Willy Adames as a potential alternative for their third base upgrade. While Bregman is a natural third baseman, Adames, a shortstop, has expressed openness to shifting to third base if joining a team like the Mets. Bringing in a high-profile third baseman could lead to significant lineup changes and raises questions about the futures of promising young players like Brett Baty.

Where will fate take Pete Alonso moving forward?

While Pete Alonso’s connection to the Mets is undeniable, the team appears to be exploring other roster-building options, which could mean Alonso’s exit. If the Mets decide to let him go, other teams will likely seize the opportunity to add his power to their lineups. The San Francisco Giants are an appealing destination for Alonso, as they’ve been actively searching for a marquee player to lead their offense. After several near-misses in recent years, they might be especially motivated to go after Alonso as a reliable power hitter to anchor their lineup.

The Seattle Mariners could also benefit from Alonso’s bat, though T-Mobile Park’s challenging conditions for right-handed hitters present some obstacles. Additionally, with the Mariners unlikely to spend big this offseason, their pursuit of Alonso seems less probable. The Houston Astros are prioritizing Alex Bregman’s future, which may impact their spending flexibility at first base. However, Alonso would be an ideal fit, adding significant power to their roster. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays could experiment by shifting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to third base, creating room for Alonso at first.

As for the Boston Red Sox, while rumors suggest a possible trade involving Triston Casas, the team may be hesitant to make a drastic move. Casas has shown promising potential, and if the Red Sox view him as part of their long-term plan, they might choose to pass on Alonso for now.

Each of these teams could make a case for Alonso, but whether they’ll make the leap depends on their broader offseason strategies. Given Alonso’s power and proven production, he won’t lack suitors. The question remains: who will be willing to make the substantial commitment to land him? Drop your predictions in the comment section below!
