The Los Angeles Dodgers are riding a wave of success, having won five of their last six games, culminating in a resounding 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies today. This triumph, however, is tempered by a mixed bag of news on the injury front. While veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw edges closer to his much-anticipated return, setbacks for Max Muncy and a slight concern over Bobby Miller’s velocity add a touch of uncertainty to the team’s immediate future.
Despite these challenges, the Blue Crew’s recent performance, bolstered by stellar pitching from Gavin Stone and timely home runs from Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, offers a glimpse into the team’s potential once its roster is back at full strength. The return of Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer, is expected to inject a significant boost into the team’s rotation. But as the Dodgers eagerly await his return, they must also navigate the complexities of their injury situation.

Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ ace pitcher, took a significant step forward in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. He threw his first simulated game at Dodger Stadium, reaching 88 mph on his fastball—a promising sign considering his 90.7 mph exit velo average over the last three seasons. “It went OK,” said Kershaw. “I feel all right. Shoulder feels healthy, and now it’s just a matter of building the pitches back up and getting ready to go.”
Kershaw will continue his progression with another simulated game, throwing two innings in Rancho Cucamonga while the Dodgers are away. Manager Dave Roberts estimates Kershaw’s return to be around six weeks away, aligning with the All-Star break. “Right now, we’re way ahead of schedule,” Roberts said. “So I think that’s really encouraging.” This optimism, however, is tempered by the setbacks faced by other key players.

Bobby Miller, Los Angeles Dodgers’ young right-hander, experienced a velocity drop in his second rehab start, raising concerns. Miller’s four-seam fastball, typically averaging 98.3 mph, fell to 95–97 mph. Despite this, Miller reassured, “I don’t know why there was a little bit of a velocity drop. It could have just been an adrenaline thing. There was not much adrenaline at all… I felt fine. I feel ready.”
Dave Roberts provides an update on Bobby Miller and discusses the upcoming schedule.

Max Muncy’s situation is more concerning. The slugger suffered a setback in his recovery from a right rib-cage strain. Initially expecting a quick recovery, Muncy felt a “twinge” in his rib cage during batting practice and has been shut down indefinitely. “It’s one of those things where my body was telling me to slow things down,” Muncy said, expressing his frustration.
Despite the injury concerns, the team delivered a dominant performance against the Rockies today.
Los Angeles Dodgers dominate Colorado Rockies behind Stone, Betts, and Freeman
Gavin Stone, the starting pitcher, had another impressive outing, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six over five shutout innings. Stone’s ERA now stands at an impressive 2.90.
Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman provided the offensive firepower, each hitting a solo home run in the first inning. Betts’ homer was his fourth leadoff home run this season, and Freeman’s marked the eighth time the Dodgers have hit at least two home runs in an inning this year.
Freeman continued his strong performance, scoring twice and driving in two runs. His sacrifice fly in the eighth inning brought home Jason Heyward, extending the Blue Crew’s lead to 4-0.

Michael Grove, Alex Vesia, and Daniel Hudson combined to complete the shutout, marking the team’s sixth shutout this season and second in five games.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ recent success, coupled with Kershaw’s imminent return, paints a promising picture for the team. However, the injuries to Muncy and the uncertainty surrounding Miller’s velocity serve as reminders of the challenges the team faces. As they prepare for their upcoming series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Blue Crew will need to balance their optimism with caution, carefully managing their roster to ensure a successful season.
