The former Houston Astros star, Alex Bregman, continues to hit the roadblocks while trying to find the perfect landing spot for the 2025 MLB season. The struggle is the same – looking for a new team on a deal that can exceed six years rather than upfront money amid his shrinking sweepstakes.

Alex declined a major offer made by the Houston Astros earlier this winter—a six-year, $156 million contract. Since then, he has acquired very little attention from the other teams. However, Bregman’s slashing. 375/.490/.750 with an impressive 1.240 OPS cannot be ignored. Currently, it seems his market is making the turns with not just the Astros, but other teams vying for his services, too.

Bregman’s cooling sweepstakes hints at a reunion with the Astros

Since becoming a free agent, Alex Bregman has not experienced the demand he was expecting. Reportedly seeking a deal worth at least $200 million for longer than six years, he turned down Houston. Top MLB insider, Bob Nightengale, on January 24, said on the Apple podcast, That contract is on the table, and I don’t think the Houston is going to bounce from it. For Alex, you get more for a year, but somebody else will give him more than six years. I am not sure about that.

So, what will be it for Breggy – upfront money or a long-term contract? Indications suggest that he is more interested in the long-term deal, coming under a dilemma that the Astros are trying to exploit. Bob went on to say that the club won’t possibly offer Alex anything above the $156 million mark. He is currently 30 years of age, and given that there are uncertainties about his performance in the next 3 to 4 years, that seems quite a fair deal, isn’t it?

With the sweepstakes shrinking, Scott Boras, representing Bregman, believes that returning to the Houston Astros would be the right call. However, if the Astros get him back, infield adjustments would be required, shifting Isaac Padres to second base and Jose Altuve to left field. While there has been no official confirmation about the possible reunion, the Astros could also trade their reliever Ryan Pressly to retain Bregman. But it’s not just his former team, another suitor is also aiming to grab him.

Detroit Tigers can be an ideal landing spot for the All-Star

Rumors are there that the Detroit Tigers might be one of the major contenders for the Astros’ $189 million two-time All-Star Alex Bregman. The Tigers, after a mediocre offseason, are expected to make some good strategic moves. Bregman’s impressive record of.275/.315/.453 slash line, 4.1 WAR, and 26 home runs in 2024 make him a strong asset for Detroit’s lineup. Alex might be the missing piece as they attempt to qualify for the playoffs. But that’s not all!

Given Bregman’s skill set and experience, the Detroit Tigers may also view him as a long-term prospect. Additionally, Alex’s strong relationship with his former manager, A.J. Hinch, who is currently the Tigers’ manager, would give the team an extra edge in terms of familiarity and rapport building. It would promote higher cohesion both on and off the field and improve the team dynamics.

So, with the Tigers standing on the verge of making a transformative move, the fans are speculating about the Astros’ front office decision to extend the offer to Bregman. This can shape the Tiger’s destiny and also increase their chances of reaching new heights of success and competitiveness in MLB.
