Two-time World Series winner Alex Bregman is in the headlines again! Since his departure from the Houston Astros, the former Golden Glove winner and All-Star remains a free agent. However, there is a significant buzz in the media regarding the message from the Astros’ skipper, which is a sigh of relief for him amidst the shrinking sweepstakes. But why?
Well, Alex Bregman is looking for a long-term, $200 million offer, and none of the teams are willing to pay such a huge amount. They have shown a lack of interest in long-term commitments; however, speculations are high about a possible reunion after Alex receives the message. Although there’s no official confirmation yet, another team looks to be the main contender—the Boston Red Sox.

Alex Bregman’s sweepstakes have shrunk rapidly given that the number he seeks is something the teams aren’t interested in. He even turned down a $156 million, six-year contract from the Astros; his agent, Scott Boras, was not willing to accept that deal. However, considering that Alex had a poor 2024 season and there might be uncertainty over his performance in the next couple of years—he is thirty years old—there aren’t many who want to pay him for a long-term commitment contract. But the doors aren’t closed for him yet, with the Astros’ manager, Joe Espada, sending a strong message for him.

Joe said on January 16, “Our arms are still open; the doors are still open, and there’s always a chance. But now, we are in conversations with him and also other free agents.” With the spring training to begin in a couple of weeks, he is hopeful to come up with a good decision that may make the fans happy. Joe Espada also mentioned that he shares a strong bond with Alex Bregman. He has done a lot for the community, and every player wants to know about him—that’s what makes the reunion very likely. However, there’s another team that seems to be the prime contender for Alex Bregman—the Boston Red Sox.
A big chance that the Red Sox may seize the opportunity to get Alex Bregman
With just a couple of weeks to the spring straining, free agent Alex Bregman is still without any takers. Although speculations are high regarding a possible Alex-Astros reunion, the Boston Red Sox has been linked to him more closely. Alex has great offensive power, making 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, and strengthened his defensive ability too. It would help them to improve the offensive production and alleviate chances of success in the upcoming season. As for Bregman, he is also flexible when playing second base, which can complement Rafael Devers perfectly, who plays third base. With the swing becoming an integral part of the play, he would be a perfect fit. But that’s not all!

The Boston Red Sox’s ace pitcher, Walker Buehler, has a good dynamic with Alex, not just because they had a faceoff earlier, but they also share a mutual ownership of a horse that won the Santa Anita Derby. Although a horse may not be the only reason for Bregman to sign with the Red Sox, it surely gives an edge to them. Additionally, he has dominated at Boston’s ballpark, Fenway Park, with an impressive 1.240 OPS, which makes him better suited as well. However, the main question is whether the Red Sox’s Chief Joe Espada would like to spend on Alex Bregman or not.
