The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series wins in the history of the franchise, with 2009 being the last win for them. It was also the last World Series win for Captain Derek Jeter. The Yanks played against the Philadelphia Phillies with game 1 played at Yankee Stadium.

To add stars to the already big event, the then-first lady of the United States of America graced Yankee Stadium with her presence. She got joined by the then Vice President’s wife, Jill Biden. She came to the Yankee Stadium to support a cause, met with the players, and also high-fived a fan in the stands on her way out of the ballpark. Naturally, the Captain also greeted her and made her trip memorable.
What did Derek Jeter do that made her visit even more special?
Major League Baseball dedicated game one of the World Series 2009 to the Veterans and their families. Known as an advocate for poverty awareness, education, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy eating, the then-first lady coming to the Yankee Stadium seemed natural.
Mrs. Biden, and wearing a maroon World Series jacket, Mrs. Obama went on their way off the field, Captain Derek Jeter gave them both a peck on their cheeks. Then, as the crowd cheered, the former first lady went off to one of the Yankee tunnels, but not before she accepted the request of a fan for a high-five.

Came for a noble cause, the former first lady had fulfilled her purpose. She visited a Bronx veterans’ hospital and gave goody bags filled with Yankees caps and teddy bears earlier in the day. And then, she, with Mrs. Biden, had escorted Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra to the mound for the pregame ceremony honoring the nation’s veterans.
It was the last time that the Yankees played a World Series!
After 2009, several times, the Pinstripes have been in the playoffs. But they haven’t been able to reach the World Series even once.

The Captain Derek Jeter tried for five more years till he got retired in his 20th season of the MLB career in 2014. It’s been 13 years since the Yankees have stayed without a World Series ring, and hopefully, it will come soon.
