Spring training is already underway, and almost everyone has signed, even Pete Alonso. Keyword—almost. That’s because Alex Bregman is still out there, a star without a team, a storyline without an ending. Will he have the same fate as Pete Alonso and head back to the team he is most comfortable in? Well, as the mystery unfolds, he is busy training relentlessly. He even posted an Instagram workout video with the caption, “bread & butter,” signaling his commitment to staying game-ready. But as weeks pass, the uncertainty is growing.
Bergman has spent his career with the Houston Astros. And he would head there if they offered his ask of a long-term deal of at least six years. However, given he is already in his 30s and also didn’t have the best of seasons last time, no one wants to meet that demand.
However, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox, and even the Houston Astros have offered four years till now. The Houston Astros, though, looked to be in the position to retain Bregman, but now seems like a long shot. General Manager Dana Brown referred to Bregman in the past tense recently. At the annual Astros Luncheon, Brown said, “We lost Tucker and Bregman.” Hinting that they have moved on from him.

Meanwhile, MLB insider Joel Sherman is adding more fuel to the speculation, stating, “It sure looks like it’s going to be a divorce with Alex Bregman. He’s going to end up signing someplace else.” Still, the Houston Astros cannot be ruled out completely for Alex Bregman. If he is unable to get the long-term deal he wants, he can sign a short-term contract with a high AVV. Isn’t that what his agent Scott Boras managed for Cody Bellinger last season? Right now Bellinger is happy and content in New York with the Yankees.
If that happens, then there is a chance that Alex Bregman will stay in Houston itself. But it won’t be without competition. There are many rumors of how Bregman will end up in the Chicago Cubs. But things look “unclear” right now. Instead, there is another team that many believe Bregman will end up on.
Are the Cubs closing in on Alex Bregman?
The Chicago Cubs are off to an early start in spring training, as they are gearing up for their season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Japan. And they have some great moves this off-season, like getting Kyle Tucker and adding Ryan Pressly. But there is a lingering question, and that’s—will they end up getting Alex Bregman?
For months now, the Cubs have been linked to the former Houston Astros star. And truly getting the two-time WS champion would make them an instant NL Central favorite. But when asked about the possibility, Jed Hoyer, the president of baseball operations, said things are, “unclear.” Pretty vague answer! And if they don’t act soon, chances are Toronto will.

Chad Jennings of The Athletic predicted that Bregman would sign with Toronto instead. “This is the splash the Blue Jays have been trying to make for a couple of years. Bregman is a better fit — both short-term and long-term — than Alonso would have been, and he would give the Blue Jays one of the best infields in all of baseball alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Andrés Giménez. Bergman is basically the biggest move any team could make, and the Blue Jays are as motivated as anyone to make it.”
Acquiring Bregman would be a huge move for any team in the hunt to strengthen their bullpen. But for Toronto, it might be much more important. They want to extend the contract of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Hence, putting that winning team would make acquiring him easier. Bergman does meet the big-picture vision for the Toronto Blue Jays.
