The Juan Soto trade situation has left the baseball world divided. While some want the New York Yankees to trade for him right away, others are of the opinion that they must for him to hit his free agency next year. This divide has spread to insiders as well. While one insider recently said that a Soto trade was as obvious as they come, now another is actively discouraging the Bronx squad from doing it.

There are many reasons for it but it all boils down to how much Soto costs. It doesn’t just involve his high salary but also many other points that this insider feels make his trade a losing proposition for any team.

Insider calls Juan Soto an expensive rental

It was only a matter of time before divided opinions entered the media circle. It has happened now with the Soto saga. Jon Heyman of the NY Post recently wrote an article where he talked about the trade situation of the Dominican star. While he appreciated Soto’s talent, he was not impressed with the Yankees going after him now when his free agency is just a year away.

Heyman talked about giving away young talent and a high amount of money for Soto. He asked the Yankees, “The question then is whether you want to give up a combination of promising young players for a rent-a-hitter with a likely $32 million price tag via arbitration.” Heyman then listed the players he felt would’ve to be traded. His list included Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, and Drew Thorpe.

He was also quick to point out that it was near impossible for the Pinstripes to convince Soto for an extension right now. The slugger has already rejected an offer worth $440 million from the Washington Nationals, he would look for an amount that can be achieved only during his free agency.

All of this convinced him that taking in Soto would be a bad deal for the Yankees. Especially when there is a more convenient and better option available in the market. The option that wouldn’t force them to lose their prospects.

Heyman calls for the Yankees to go after Cody Bellinger

According to Heyman, Cody Bellinger fills almost every hole that Soto would. Yes, he isn’t as consistent a hitter as the Childish Bambino is but he can cover the center field as well which makes him a versatile addition to their roster.

Bellinger also happens to cost much less than Soto and is immensely strong in reading the situation. His two-strike average of .279 was the second-best in all baseball in 2023.

So with the experts divided, the Soto situation has certainly grown more interesting. One wonders what its outcome will be.
