The Mariners’ celebration of an incredible catch turned into a tense moment when centerfielder Victor Robles made a jaw-dropping play, potentially the best of the 2025 season—at a steep cost. Despite Robles’ incredible effort, the Mariners lost the game to the Giants, 5-4, and worse, Robles’ injury scare added more concern to an already tough day. While the team has not released any specific details yet, the footage doesn’t paint a promising picture for the Mariners. What exactly caused the injury, and what would it mean if they lose Robles?
After being cut by the Nationals, Robles had a breakout season last year with the Mariners, earning a two-year extension. He posted an impressive .328/.393/.467 line with 30 stolen bases in 77 games, becoming the fastest player in Mariners history to reach 30 stolen bases in a season. This year, he’s hitting .256, with a projected wRC+ of 106, showing he could still be a major contributor. Losing Robles at this stage would be a tough blow for a Mariners team already struggling to find consistent success. Injuries to key players, especially those who give it their all, can be devastating, and today, the Mariners found themselves in that unfortunate situation.
“I just noticed he was in pain, and I immediately called the trainers,” said Mariners centerfielder Julio Rodriguez, who was the first to respond after Robles’ catch. It all went down when Robles sprinted nearly 100 feet to make a spectacular catch on a deep fly ball off the bat of the Giants’ Patrick Bailey. Incredibly, Robles managed to make the grab, but in doing so, he crashed into the ballpark netting. As he bounced back, his body twisted awkwardly, and he was clearly in pain. He crumpled to the ground, clearly hurting, and after a tense moment, trainers helped him off the field for further evaluation.

“Victor Robles is going through examinations in the Giants’ medical room here at Oracle Park, Dan Wilson just said, adding that it appears to be shoulder-related,” Kramer said. While it’s still unclear how long Robles will be sidelined, it’s safe to assume the Mariners will be without him for at least some time. They’ll now need to find a replacement, and with the Mariners sitting at 5th in the AL West, their window for a fix is closing quickly.

The Mariners are left scrambling for replacements
As of now, the Mariners have a few options to step in for Robles, though none can truly fill his shoes. Dylan Moore, who’s been off to a strong start this season, is a prime candidate. However, Moore is currently filling in for the injured Jorge Polanco at third base. Another option could be Luke Raley, who could shift back to the outfield from first base, allowing Donovan Solano to step in at first. Alternatively, Dominic Canzone from the minors could be promoted as a temporary solution. But with Robles’ unique skill set, it will be tough for any one player to fully replace him.
The 2024 Golden Glove Award winner is coming up with 6 homers and 19 RBIs with a BA of .243. Moreover, his flexibility to play at different positions makes him the best choice for the Mariners. For the unversed, in 2024, Moore played at 1B, 2B, 3B, left field, centerfield, and shortstop and made only 5 errors out of a total of 401 chances. However, putting Moore in place of Robles would make the Mariners search for a name at 1B. So, hopefully, Robles will come unhurt from his evaluation, and there might be a few games to miss. The Mariners are currently in a tough position with a 3-6 record. They cannot afford any more setbacks going forward.
