Spring training is underway for the Boston Red Sox, and camp is buzzing with activity. A new season lurks around the corner, and excitement hangs in the air. The work is underway, and the Red Sox are preparing to make a strong start. But fate has different plans! A cloud of uncertainty looms over their pitching rotation.

Reports about the Boston Red Sox have unfolded to reveal another devastating injury setback. The plan to pace star pitcher Kutter Crawford through a rehab program to avoid surgery has suffered a setback. Now, Crawford will ultimately undergo surgery anywhere from immediately to at some point later this season, knocking him out for an unknown duration. Pitcher Brayan Bello is also reportedly experiencing a delay in his recovery. To put it frankly, the Red Sox pitching staff is in a bad spot heading into the season.

Crawford’s knee injury, which has lingered since about the start of last season, reportedly flared up during offseason rehabilitation after initially improving over the winter, leaving Crawford’s upcoming status for the season wrapped in uncertainty. Red Sox staff continue the effort to strengthen it, but surgery is still on the table. Crawford injured it covering first base during his third start of last season, and he has struggled with it since, according to his disclosure. Bello had been temporarily shut down due to some shoulder soreness, but it is expected he will begin throwing soon.

But you know what’s more ironic?

The Red Sox is not tense about this at all. Also, the manager Alex Cora has said that both Crawford and Brayan Bello are also behind schedule, but he is optimistic about their recoveries.

But we all know that the possible unavailability of Crawford and the delayed readiness of Bello could spell significant impacts on the starting rotation for the Red Sox. Crawford led the Red Sox with 33 starts and 183.2 innings pitched. Bello made 30 starts with a 4.49 ERA.

Both being behind schedule will require leaning in depth and recovering quickly from injury. Even with that depth, the absence of key players like Crawford and Bello could still pose a challenge. Especially when the Red Sox were 18th in team ERA with 4.14. Losing two of their top three starters and innings leaders will surely strain the pitching staff’s performance in the upcoming season.

Red Sox add depth to the roster

The Red Sox is not all about motormouth! To help fill in the Red Sox rotation, they’ve added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, giving them some added depth. This should provide some insulation to the injuries to Crawford and Bello, but the requisite caution to workload still exists.

The more surprising thing is that Crawford’s persistence is admirable, leading the team in starts and innings pitched last season despite his knee troubles. The will and grit to play through pain and injury is praiseworthy, but his body has paid the price for it. The team will have to be cautious to ensure he is fully healed before taking the mound again.

The news of these setbacks has understandably left Red Sox fans frustrated.“This feels like this happens at the start of spring training every year. Someone goes down early with an injury that no one knew about. How can we get away from this?!” as well as “And it begins,” says another fan. Some fans are optimistic too. “This is why having 6 x SP’s is a very good thing. Someone is always injured or they need rest,” one of the fans said. And one of the fans isn’t concerned. “I wouldn’t be either cuz if they need extra time we have Richard Fitts and Quinn Priester waiting in the wings,” He supported the manager.

The degree to which this team achieves this year will depend on managing those issues and staying healthy.

Do you think the Red Sox are being too optimistic? Tell us why or why not in the comments!”
