Sports Illustrated magazine caught up with Jeter for an interview back in 2009. Jeter thus got asked about his post-retirement plans and thoughts on taking up a certain role in the sport.
What did Derek Jeter plan for his post-retirement life?
While Derek Jeter was active as a player, he only ever cared about his professional progress. And being a frontline pick for the starting lineup, Jeter couldn’t afford to rest. But playing 162 games in a regular season for more than a decade can take its toll on any individual. So Jeter spoke up on his preference regarding what manner he preferred to connect with the sport after retiring.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated magazine in 2009 about his post-retirement plans, Jeter said, “I would like to own a team. I would like to be able to call the shots, be able to make some decisions. You’re still a part of a team. You’re still competing. I like to compete. I’m competitive by nature. I think it would be fun. Once again, I’m not going to do anything unless it’s fun. I think it would be fun. (But) that’s down the road.”

The reporter further asked Jeter, “What about managing or coaching?” Jeter replied, saying, “Nooo. Because I’d like to have a family one day. And I’d like to be around (them). Coaching, you’re right back to the same travel (as a player).”

Notably, Jeter bid farewell to his playing tenure in 2014 and married supermodel Hannah Davis in 2016. The couple is now a set of parents to three daughters. Derek even fulfilled his owning an MLB team in 2017. He became a co-owner of the Miami Marlins and administered the franchise as the CEO until his resignation in 2022. Additionally, he is also an MLB Hall Of Fame inductee.
