According to insider extraordinaire Jon Heyman of The Post, the New York Mets are sniffing blood in the MLB free-agent market. The team is sensing a prime opportunity to snag a power bat at a discount. With the designated hitter stove noticeably cool, Mets GM Billy Eppler is eyeing sluggers, hoping to inject some pop into a lineup that sputtered last season. Who will come out as the winner of the Queens’ DH crown?

They aren’t alone in their hunt for bargain boppers. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Angels, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and a host of other contenders are circling the DH discount bin, wary of shelling out megabucks for players on the wrong side of 30. But even in this buyer’s market, there’s a method to the Mets’ madness.

El Mago Soler, with his 32-year-old power wand (36 homers!), low Ks, and high walks, stands confident. The Toronto Blue Jays want him, but the Mets could steal a bargain. Martinez, while doubling his homers, has proven that 36 ain’t old for mashing. Elite bat speed, but strikeouts pile up. Can he be the middle-of-the-order force?

The professor, Turner, on the other hand, is 39 and still batting like a 29! Walks aplenty, rare Ks, and defensive versatility. He’s leadership gold material, but his everyday defense is a question. Mr. Righty Belt crushes aces like grapes, but his knees are creaky. He can be a lefty-mashing DH weapon, as he already swings mean. So, who will ultimately wear the Citi Field crown?

In raw power? It will definitely be one between Soler and JDM. In leadership and flexibility? Turner. Lefty mashing? Belt. The choice is the New York Mets’, and Citi Field might need longer foul poles if they swing right. This DH derby’s a Flushing feast—and it looks like it’s going to be a long, delicious season!
