Anthony Volpe has been a much-talked-about name in the last few days. A stellar ballplayer, he has been making waves in the Yankees organization ever since getting drafted in 2019. And on March 27th, Volpe and Yankees fans received some much-awaited news – he had made it to starting shortstop on Opening Day. The 21-year-old competed with Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa for the SS spot.

During the Yankees’ last spring training game against the Nationals, Volpe made a daring play reminiscent of his idol, Derek Jeter. Although the Nationals won 3-0, the Bronx Bombers have an impressive roster that will serve them well in the upcoming season. And of course, Volpe will be part of the lineup in the team’s match-up against the San Francisco Giants on March 30th. If he keeps up his game, he will only prove the exceptional talent the Yankees have on their hands.

Talkin’ Yanks posted a clip of the moment on Twitter, and it showed Volpe making a complicated catch. ‘Flashing the leather’, the caption read. Meaning an excellent defensive play, but made into a complex move at the moment. Fans roared with delight when Volpe crashed to the ground but stood up again immediately, ball in hand. The shortstop has long been a fan favorite and those cheers will only get louder.

Baseball fans are genuinely pleased about the Yankees’ new addition.

Some think Volpe is truly special and should be receiving awards already!

And one fan even had a Jeter comparison.

The names Volpe and Jeter have been uttered in the same sentence before and the young star might actually live up to the Captain’s legacy.

This wasn’t the first time Volpe dived for a catch

Believe it or not, it’s true. In a Double-A Somerset Patriots game, Volpe made the same move and dove to make a catch at shortstop. Then he threw the ball to first, and the batter was out. It sure reminds one of the similar moves Jeter used to make during his active years.
