It seems the Pete Alonso saga with the Mets will end soon! The recent developments are indicating a positive end. How? As per the recent reports, Alonso was seen on the flight to New York, which is coincidental considering the Mets owner Steve Cohen shared how he is frustrated with Alonso’s contract issues. The rumor mill is in overdrive, speculating whether Alonso is taking matters into his own hands to break the stalemate.”

It is difficult to conclude if Alonso has taken things into his own hands because there is no concrete evidence. However, the hardball game played by his agent Scott Boras has made things worse for him with teams yet to offer him a deal. If Alonso is truly making moves on his own, fans can expect a potential return to Queens. But why is Alonso getting desperate to return to the Queens when he is already in talks with a few other teams? How would Alonso fit if the Mets finalize their roster?

Alonso needs the Mets desperately

Since Alonso is rumored to have rejected the qualifying offer of $70 million by the Mets, he has been in talks with the Blue Jays and Angels but nothing fruitful has come yet. The major reason is his asking price of north of $100 million. After the Mets, the Blue Jays were considered frontrunners for Alonso, but after committing $92.5 million to Anthony Santander, their payroll flexibility has diminished. The competitive bargains by the non-Boras players are putting more hurdles towards Alonso.

The recent contract between Jurickson Profar and the Braves for three years worth $42 million opened the window for short-term deals, leaving a little scope for players like Pete Alonso to make a strong case. Well, nothing is going on his side, and it seems that the qualifying offer by the Mets was the best for him. With spring training approaching, re-signing with the Mets appears to be Alonso’s best option.

Apart from the fact that Alonso is going to meet the Mets or not, it is quite understandable that the hardball approach by his agent Boras is not going to work anymore and now it is Alonso‘s moves that can make a deal. The statement by MLB insider Pete Hoffman in the podcast with Evan Roberts, “Alonso seen flying to New York and maybe he is taking things into his own hands now”, seems very logical and probable now. No matter whether Alonso is going to make a move or not, the fans are only hoping to get the star slugger to the team, which would be best for both parties.

Moving forward with or without the Polar Bear?

The recent moves by the Mets indicate their intention to go without Alonso. However, with Alonso yet to find his new home, the Mets are still in talks for any last-minute turnaround. The Mets’ $70 million offer remains on the table, but they’re keeping their options open—especially if Alonso avoids signing with a rival. Reportedly the Mets are in contention for the veteran Jose Iglesias for 3B, while placing Mark Vientos to 1B. Enough to replace Alonso?

If not enough, then they are also considering trades for Ryan Mountcastle of the Baltimore Orioles and Spencer Torkelson of the Detroit Tigers. Seems like the Mets are all away from Pete Alonso and for him to return to the Queens all depends on his flexibility with the qualifying offer. For the Mets, staying away from their star performer who made 34 HRs and 88 RBIs last year is difficult to execute.

Getting Alonso for 1B is indeed the best thing for the Mets, no matter what options they seek, and finding common ground will have mutual benefits for both parties here.
