The Mets just took their first big hit of the season. Everything was looking promising heading into 2025, but now the fan base is reeling from a brutal blow—Francisco Alvarez is out. A fractured hamate bone in his left hand means surgery, and that’s a nightmare for New York. So, who’s stepping up to fill the void?

As the Mets suffered a huge setback, getting hit hard by the injury of their star pitcher, rumors of trading for Tomas Nido are doing the rounds. So, who is it? Tomas Nido is currently a Detroit Tigers’ catcher and was drafted in the eighth round in 2012. So, Nido, when compared with other players in terms of variables and stats, had a 45.03 GP%, 0.24 RBI/GM, 0.20 AVG/YR, 0.54 OPS, and 0.26 WOBP. Do you think that will be the right call to sign him until Alvarez returns?

Francisco Alvarez’s record with the Mets hasn’t been that good, to be precise. He had a quiet 2024 season with 308 AB, 11 home runs, and 47 RBIs at an average of .237, .307 OBP, and .710 OPS. However, Alvarez has still been a major contributor to the Mets, and his absence is a big blow, especially when a starting pitcher goes down. So now, with the doors open, the Mets are looking to get an American League rival, Tomas Nido.

Mets insider Andy Martino shared on his X handle, “My speculation: What about a trade for Tomas Nido for the Mets? Currently in Tigers camp. It takes time to learn a staff, and Nido has relationships here. Torrens/Nido would be a fine stopgap combo until Alvarez returns.

Tomas Nido is currently playing for the Detroit Tigers; however, he has contacts with the Mets, which makes him a good choice to play alongside Luis Torrens for the time being. Nido was selected in the majors earlier by the Mets when a similar incident happened—Francisco Alvarez tore a ligament in his thumb—and Nido was the replacement.

During his 32 games with the Mets, he made 90 plate appearances and posted a .229/.261/.361 slash line, along with three home runs, while displaying his strong defensive skills too. But soon after becoming a free agent, he signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers. Now, amid the injury of their star player, the Mets are eyeing the $740,000 catcher, which may turn out to be a great bet for them.

However, doesn’t it seem like the Mets are gradually falling apart?

The Mets are no longer looking like major contenders for the World Series title

Just like the New York Yankees, the Mets have a similar fate as injuries keep haunting them again and again. While the 2025 season is yet to start, key players getting sidelined or missing games isn’t any good sign. And that’s exactly what’s happening with the Mets, who lost their star catcher, Francisco Alvarez, due to an injury, which dwindles their hopes of making it to the playoffs. But he’s not the only one on the injured list of players. There’s Frankie Montas, who had a lat strain injury, getting completely shut down for nearly three weeks. But that’s not all!

The New York Mets signed Sean Manaea for a three-year, $75 million deal last year, and the 33-year-old established himself quite well. With the right-hander Kodai Senga missing out on a good number of innings in the previous season, Manaea made his way onto the team, going 12-6 with 184 strikeouts across 181 2/3 innings at a 3.47 ERA. He quickly became one of the main players on the team; however, that took a hit when he got injured. But as per David Stearns, Manaea is doing well and signaling a good return to the mound, which can bolster the pitching rotation for the Mets quite effectively.
