What does it take for a $102 million star to break the internet with a health update? Apparently, something so bizarre. It had the entire Mets fanbase blinking twice and going, “Wait… what just happened?”
It all unfolded during an overall intense clash between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. And just when the Mets’ bullpen ace entered the mound in the top of the ninth inning, things got a lot more freakish with his strange injury setback. It’s the Mets’ Edwin Diaz.
Diaz has been known for his reliability throughout his career. Although he had a rough start to the 2025 season, carrying a 4.91 ERA across 11 games. Against the Phillies, Diaz entered during the ninth inning to deliver a flawless final frame. And then, at the time of the 10th inning, he was again called in to pitch. It was the first time this season when he was called in to take down more than one inning. After surrendering a go-ahead RBI to Nick Castellanos, Diaz was delivering a first-pitch fastball to J.T. Realmuto. That’s when he felt like his hip got locked up.

Mets trainers noticed that one of Edwin Díaz’s legs was longer than the other yesterday
They fixed the issue, says Díaz: “I was feeling better after” pic.twitter.com/x39O16wIsV

In fact, when he was prepping to pitch, he couldn’t even lift his leg up. Diaz left the mound to try and loosen up. Let’s note that pitchers are only allowed to leave the mound twice, not more than that. And guess what?
He disengaged from the mound two times, and nothing seemed to work. Then, Diaz was called for a balk to move Castellanos to second base. Just like that, he was pulled out of the game. Eventually, the game was tied at 2-2.
During the postgame interview with SNY, Diaz explained the injury. He revealed something strange that baffled the fans: “Yesterday, my legs—one was longer than the other one. We worked on that yesterday. I don’t know if that was a problem.” What magic makes one leg longer?
Apparently, the trainer worked on his hips, and he mentioned that they fixed the issue. Of course, the reporters didn’t hold back asking what caused the leg lengthening. He answered, “I don’t know. I didn’t ask. He just did it, and I was feeling better after.”

Fans spiral into confusion after Diaz’s strange injury
Just when Edwin Diaz left the mound with hip cramps, nobody expected what would follow. What stunned the fandom wasn’t his injury, but what he explained about it. His one leg being longer than the other for just one day made most of the fans burst out laughing.
Given the strange setback, fans can’t be blamed for being sarcastic about it. As one fan put it, “So…they cut off part of his leg? 😂”, it made absolutely no sense. Can one leg actually be shorter than another? Bizarre! Although Diaz did mention earlier this week that he felt an odd sensation in his leg while he was warming up before a game.
A reaction that collectively summed up what the entire Metsies must be feeling at the moment: “Ummmm….. what??” Diaz was treated back in the clubhouse with some dry needling. He also had to pass a series of strength tests.

Fans weren’t even curious; they were downright puzzled. And honestly, it’s fair: “What are we talking about? What the?” They were just screaming from their screens in pure disbelief. Another fan similarly reacted: “His what is longer than what?” Diaz’s explanation left everyone connecting the dots. And well, they did try, but in the end, they couldn’t wrap their heads around it.
Some wanted to believe they must have misunderstood: Am I trippin or am I actually reading one of his legs is longer than the other?”
The reaction that subtly brought sarcastic urgency to Diaz’s non-serious injury. As one fan stated, “w– is happening right now?? Get his legs the same size NOW!” This has to be the one reaction everyone resonated with. But there’s nothing to worry about; Diaz is feeling better now. As he put it post-game, “I feel strong. We did some work on my hip, and I was feeling better after.” Now we will see him come out stronger than ever.
