Controversy? Rumor? Or just some facts? Call it whatever you want, but the Yankees’ Torpedo bat drama seems to have taken the sports world by storm. With the bats already deemed legal as per MLB rule 3.02, the Yankees players do not have enough to explain their perspective. The latest addition is the Yankees slugger Jazz Chisholm Jr., explaining the utility of the torpedo bats. And amidst all these, NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell’s comment has grabbed a whole new level of say whaaaat!

Being a Mets superfan, often sporting their jersey and fitted cap to show his support, Mitchell was so passionate about baseball that he wanted to play in the league, but an injury turned him to basketball. But that has not stopped him from either following the sport or commenting on the latest trends.

So, when Chisholm Jr. said, “Okay, explanation the barrel is bigger and within MLB regulation! For the idiots that say it’s moved to the label, you’re an idiot! Nobody is trying to get jammed you just move the wood from the parts you don’t use to the parts you do! You’re welcome no more stress for y’all!”, the Westchester County-born decided to rag their archnemesis a bit.

“Naa yall are cheating and should be suspended for the season,” Donovan Mitchell replied, quoting Chisholm’s X post. Even though he was laughing out loud with his comment, the Mets are surely hoping for the same!

But no matter how lighthearted or candid this post was, the ongoing debate surrounding how the Yankees were on a record-breaking spree in their first three games is not going away anytime soon.

Through their first three games, the Yankees have amassed 36 runs, which is 22 more than their opponents in MLB. In Saturday’s triumph over the Brewers, they hit a team-record nine home runs. Austin Wells, Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm Jr. (who hit two home runs on Sunday), and Volpe all utilize these new bats.

So, it’s not that the torpedo bats are just garnering discussions; they are generating interest too. Who knows, they might be the new normal in baseball.

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Yankees' torpedo bats a game-changer or just another way to bend the rules?

Have an interesting take?

The Torpedo bats are here to stay beyond the Yankees

An unconventional barrel that rests closer to the hitter’s hands defines the torpedo bats, which are already certified lawful. More mass is focused on the part of the bat where the hitter has the best chance of hitting the ball. Some are considering that the sweet spot has been moved in torpedo bats.

With that being said, batters are more interested in trying out the same. So, it’s just about time that torpedo bats will be common among all other teams.

The Padres hitter Manny Machado shared, “I have no idea what they are. They should send a few over here if they’re going to be hitting homers like that. So whoever’s making ‘em, they can send a few over to Petco with this big ballpark.” Evidently, more batters are interested in trying out the new concept. But it doesn’t end there!

In his pinch-hit appearance, the Rays slugger Junior Caminero hit an infield single and told reporters he used a “Torpedo” bat. According to Caminero, he will keep using the new bat “sometimes” during the season. So, if the bat at all has something to do with how the hits go, this season might witness more homers raining down all over the parks.

However, not everyone in the pinstripes is using these. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Aaron Judge!

In the opening game, the Yankees captain hit 3 home runs that too with this conventional bat, and is not fond of changing the same, as well. Logical, right? Why change something that is working fine?

But despite all the back-and-forth, one thing is for sure – the torpedo bats are here to stay. And the pitchers will be at the receiving end, getting hammered by the torpedo.
