Pete Alonso and the New York Mets have been at a crossroads for the past few weeks. The speculations around Pete’s future with the Mets have been the town’s talk. As the Mets make moves in the market for the future, the uncertainty around whether he will be part of their plans arises. Despite being fans’ favorite, there is something that does not let Pete Alonso align his path with the Mets.

Alonso has been a key figure in the Mets’ offense, known for his towering home runs and clutch moments, but the franchise’s direction could mean big changes. As rumors around his future with the Mets swirl, it is General Manager David Stearn’s vision that is restricting Pete from their plans. Stearn is keen on keeping players who thrive on speed, versatility, and flexibility- traits that unfortunately do not go with an aging Pete Alonso. Although the emotional connection between the two parties is undeniable. However, that isn’t enough to include Pete in their plans. The idea of an aging, one-dimensional player in a non-premium position no longer fits in the mold of Stearns’ plans. It is not about whether Pete can perform or the money factor, but David’s resistance to a player whose skill set has dropped with age.

On his podcast, Mike Francesa weighed in on the situation, offering his perspective: “This has nothing to do with the money, folks. What this has to do with is the GM’s vision of this team—it doesn’t include an aging, lumbering, one-dimensional slugger at first base. He wants athletic, versatile players. This isn’t about money; if he wants something, he buys it.” Francesa’s words indicated the growing belief that Stearns is less concerned with Alonso’s contract and more focused on creating a roster that fits his long-term plans. As the team is shifting towards shaping its future, factors like versatility, agility, and speed are prioritized. With the team in a transition period, the question remains: is there a shimmer of hope that Alonso lands a spot in the plans, or is it time for a change?

Time for Alonso to move on: If not the Mets, then who?

With Pete Alonso’s return to the Mets remaining uncertain, his future remains up in the air. Despite being the face of the franchise for years, it is evident that the New York Mets have moved on from him. The Toronto Blue Jays, a team that was initially linked to Alonso, have recently shifted their focus. Signing Anthony Santander to a five-year deal and trying to lock in Guerrero Jr. for an extension, their need for another big slugger has diminished. However, Alonso’s potential still might catch their eye, especially if they seek additional depth. On the other hand, one surprise team that could look to add Alonso is the Los Angeles Angels. They are keen on adding him to their squad to bolster their chances in 2025. While the other team, Blue Jays have shifted their focus, the Angels may still see an opportunity to sign Alonso, offering him a chance to contribute to a playoff push.

While the market has changed its priorities, the change will provide Pete the opportunity to re-establish his value. As of now, it is a waiting game period for the ex-Mets slugger. Only time will tell, what waits for him.
